Background and Justification
The new-look SACO website, requires a large amount of content to be written up that is accessible, relevant and localized. With the diminished capacity of the Communication & Partnerships Section since October 2019, there is an urgent need to hire a consultant to undertake this task.
The new website is a potentially effective fundraising platform and it is essential that as much user-friendly content is written up and uploaded by a skilled writer who is able to narrate the mandate and programmes of UNICEF.
There is a need to have a short contract with qualified writer who can be contacted on a needed basis.
The Consultancy will cover the period of 3 months and service all UNICEF sections:
Communication & Partnerships
Education
Health
Child Protection & Social Policy
 Scope of Work
Goal and Objective: Under the supervision of the Fundraising specialist the consultant will draft human interest stories, briefing documents and Fact Sheets as guided by the Communication Specialist and the Fundraising Specialist and may be required to travel to field locations to gather relevant materials.
Provide details/reference to AWP areas covered: Explain briefly how this assignment links to the AWP/IR number.
Activities and Tasks:  The consultant will write, stories and other relevant documents in line with UNICEF’s branding and style guidelines.
The consultant will take notes and write documents as guided by the communication specialist and fundraising specialist.
Collect suggestions and contacts for human interest stories in consultation with the UNICEF Communications Specialist
Contact identified persons and select the most interesting/impactful human story angle
Travel to the project sites and meet with relevant people of the project activities – children, families, service providers, local authorities etc …
Coordinate with the UNICEF Communication Specialist with regard to topics and outline of the expected human-interest stories or reports.
Work relationships:  The Consultancy will cover the period of 3 months and service all UNICEF sections:

9 Human interest stories
12 Feature articles (250 – 4000) words – depending on agreement for each assignment) written in English and submitted to UNICEF as per the agreed dates
4 Brochures/fact sheets written and edited

Editing services as requested

Desired competencies, technical background and experience
A first university degree, preferably in journalism, media or similar field
At least five years in producing articles, short features, vignettes or reports for public audiences preferably in a media or development environment
Fluency in English and proven native-level writing skills
Awareness and or experience with UNICEF
Awareness of and or experience in South Africa
Administrative issues
The consultant will not be required to be based at the UNICEF office in Pretoria for the duration of the assignment but will be available when needed.
The contractor will work on their own computer(s) and use their own office resources and materials in the execution of this assignment. The contractor’s fee shall be inclusive of all office administrative costs.
The writer will draft human interest stories, briefing documents and Fact Sheets as guided by the Communication Specialist and the Fundraising Specialist and may be required to travel to field locations to gather relevant materials.
The writer/editor will be required to have his/her own equipment. All write-ups remain the property of UNICEF.
Conditions
Stating the conditions for the contract is very important. This may include information on
