Background and Justification
Strategic office context
UNICEF’s South Africa country office (SACO) has been fundraising from the private sector for over 10 years. While fundraising has primarily been through corporate partnerships, the office is now making focused efforts to build its individual-giving supporter base, through pledge-giving (individuals that donate by automated payments from bank transfers, usually on a monthly basis) and as per 2019 through major donors and high net worth individuals (HNWI)
As there is a considerable potential to tap into the major donor market, UNICEF South Africa wants to extend its fundraising work with a focus on the high network individuals in South Africa.
Purpose for the job:
The consultant will work with the Chief of Communications & Partnerships and the Corporate Fundraiser in providing strategic support to the fundraising section seeking to start/leverage the donor revenue streams of High Net Worth Individuals in South Africa
Scope of Work
Goal and Objective:  Under the supervision of the Corporate Partnerships Manager, Section Communication & Partnerships the consultant will look at mapping of the HNWI Market, draft a HNWI strategy and liaise with at least 2 prospect HNWIs before end of 2019.
Provide details/reference to AWP areas covered: This assignment relates to the Communication and Partnerships section’s AWP for 2019, Output 5.2 « Commitments and resources from the private sector are mobilized and leveraged for child rights programming and advocacy », pertaining to ‘Development of an approach to reach High Net-Worth Individuals and family foundations with the adequate offer in South Africa’
Activities and Tasks:
Strategy:
Analysis and mapping of the South African HNWI and foundation market related to philanthropic giving including impact-investing options.
Development of an approach/strategy to reach HNWIs and family foundations with the adequate offer in South Africa.
Exploration and analysis of the legacy market
Prospecting: Identify and research HNWI individuals, families and family foundations with an expected inclination to support UNICEF.
 Engagement:
Engage prospective HNWI and foundation partners able to give gifts (>$100K).
Introduce and promote UNICEF South Africa Ambassadors, Strategic Corporate partners and other senior leadership to relevant identified individuals to build personalized relationships with prospects and donors, resulting in solicitations of high value gifts.
Market Knowledge: Gather from a variety of internal and external sources information that indicates philanthropic interest, accessibility and giving-capacity of these major donor prospects
 4. Work relationships:
The consultant will be liaising with High Net Worth Individuals, Foundations, Corporate leaders and other stakeholders in South Africa.
Outputs/Deliverables:
The role will provide critically needed dedicated support to develop and implement a High Net Worth engagement strategy in South Africa, which should result in:
Significant increase in HNWI and family foundation activities in South Africa, with prospective pipeline of donors on 12-18 month time horizon.
Key prospects lists, profiles and cultivation plans developed.
At least two new strategic relationships supported through launch phase.
Advice and best practice in HNWI and foundation fundraising disseminated throughout the South Africa UNICEF network.
In agreement with the 2019 Work Plan for the Communication and Partnerships section, the consultant will have 364 days to draft the strategy and organise a mapping of the HNWI and Legacy market in South Africa. After the strategy and mapping the consultant will start liaising with prospect HNWIs
Performance indicators will be the HNWI Strategy, the HNWI Mapping, the new HNWI Relationships and the Legacy mapping and strategy.

Desired competencies, technical background and experience

Education:
Advanced University / Business School degree in Business Management, Communication, Marketing, International Relations, Social Sciences required.
A first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
Experience
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in fundraising.
Experience in cultivating high-value gifts ((>$ 100 K).
Familiarity of HNWI and foundations in South Africa.
Practiced communicator with demonstrated ability to condense information and capture and communicate is in a well-structured way
Experience working in a team
Track record of working independently and meeting tight deadlines
Knowledge of the UN system, and familiarity with UNICEF programme activities are desirable.
Language Requirements
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN language or local language is considered as an asset.
Administrative issues
 The consultant will use his/her own computer with all his/own layout and design software.
The consultant will work flexibly with the South Africa office.
