Background
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, with 192 member National Societies. Organizational Context
The Federation is served by a Secretariat based in Geneva, with regional and country offices throughout the world. The Secretariat is led by the IFRC Secretary General and provides the central capacity of the International Federation to serve, connect, and represent National Societies. The Secretariat’s focus includes providing support to the IFRC governance mechanisms; setting norms and standards; providing guidance; ensuring consistency; coordination and accountability for performance; knowledge sharing; promoting collaboration within and respect for the RCRC Movement; and expanding engagement with partners. The Secretariat’s headquarters is organized in three main business groups: (i) Partnerships, including Movement and Membership; (ii) Programs and Operations; and (iii) Management. The Secretariat has five regional office, as follows: Americas (Panama City); Africa (Nairobi); Asia/Pacific (Kuala Lumpur); Europe (Budapest); Middle East and North Africa (Beirut). The International Federation and Red Crescent Societies of the Red Cross (IFRC) ‘s Southern Africa Country Cluster office is in Pretoria , South Africa and serves ten countries, namely Angola, Botswana, E-Swatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Job Purpose
The intern will produce a ‘Media Map’ (who’s reading/watching what and where?) of the traditional and social media landscapes of 10 countries in southern Africa, as well as key selected (donor) markets still to be determined.
The intern will also be required to offer support to the Partnership and Mobilisation team, s/he will be required to map organisation income generation trends and build a donor database by identifying funding opportunities.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
The intern must be a highly motivated self-starter with a keen interest in research and passion for media, communications and strengthening of partnerships in southern Africa. At the end of the internship period, s/he will be expected to produce a Media Map, that will track and capture the traditional and social media landscape across the region.
The Media Map will need to:
track and capture the traditional and social media landscape across the region and in key selected international markets (who, in what numbers, and on what platform?)
Social media trends across southern Africa and in key international markets (what is trending, what is not, what is new)
A list of the top 10 most influential media/social media outlets and platforms across selected regional and international markets
S/he will also be expected to fulfil the following responsibilities:
Mapping of humanitarian organisations’ income generation trends
Conduct research on prospective international and local funding opportunities
Conduct research on southern Africa events that can elevate the IFRC profile
Provide administrative support to the Communications and Partnerships strategy
Education
A Bachelor’s Degree in the Humanities or Commerce, or in the final years of a Bachelor’s Degree. Preference for Business Sciences, Social Sciences or Media studies, but any research-related field will be considered.

Solid research skills
Ability to research, analyse and synthesis vast amounts of data
Solid Microsoft Excel skills
Knowledge of online analytics a must
Knowledge of range of scope of traditional media required
Knowledge of all social media outlets – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube required.
