Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. Context:
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is committed to the principle of humane and orderly migration for the benefit of migrants and the society. As the leading international organization for migration, IOM acts with its partners in the international community to assist in meeting the growing operational challenges of migration management; advance understanding of migration issues; encourage social and economic development through migration, and; uphold the human dignity and well-being of migrants.
The IOM Regional Office based in Pretoria (RO Pretoria) covers 15 countries in the Southern African region, namely Angola, Botswana, the Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. RO Pretoria provides programme support and technical expertise to IOM Country Offices in the region. All countries in the Southern African Region are IOM Member States. It has provided leadership on migration issues by coordinating efforts of various partners at national and regional levels.
The Junior Professional Officer will be provided with regular feedback on his/her performance and progress, with special attention granted to goal setting and overcoming challenges.
Under the overall supervision of the Staff Welfare Officer based in IOM HQ, Geneva Switzerland and administrative supervision of the Regional Human Resource Officer based in RO Pretoria, South Africa, the Junior Professional Officer’s duties and responsibilities will include:
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
1. Learn about and support the coordination of care and services for staff with complex mental and/or physical health issues in collaboration with Staff Counsellors in Staff Welfare (SW), Occupational Health Unit (OHU) Doctors and Human Resources Management Division (HRM) and Office of Legal Affairs (LEG) colleagues. This work to be done with mission and regional personnel.
2. Work with Staff Counsellors to develop educational and training material for IOM staff to be placed on the website and disseminated through a monthly bulletin. Support the production of relevant material and processes.
3. Enhance facilitation skills and conduct face-to-face and remote training on topics related to mental health and wellbeing, e.g. stress management, well-being and self-care. Training programmes to be built on training needs analyses agreed with Chief of Mission or designated alternative.
4. Learn about and work, as required, with colleagues to coordinate provision of psychosocial support in critical incidents and emergencies.
5. Undertake travel to missions, upon the request of SW in conjunction with the ROAP, to assess local mental health care facilities and the mission’s working environment. Identify possible partners in the missions who can support the mental health of staff locally.
6. Participate in the UN Staff and Stress Counsellor Group (UNSSCG).
7. Further develop the SW database of licensed mental health practitioners in Southern Africa.
8. Ensure that all records and reports are maintained securely and confidentially.
9. Provide managerial consultation on an as needed basis.
10. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education
• Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology or Counselling or Social Work, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience; or
• University degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience.
Experience
• Experience in providing psychosocial support;
• Knowledge and experience in facilitating training and developing curricula;
• Experience in clinical counselling psychology, or psychotherapy and counselling services an asset;
• Experience of working in a multi-cultural setting.
Skills
• English writing, communication and negotiation skills
• Computer/software literate, preferably knowledgeable in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop with experience of regularly updating a website
Languages
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge in French, Portuguese and/or Spanish is an advantage.

COACHING AND LEARNING ELEMENTS
As an integral part of the IOM assignment the Junior Professional Officer will acquire:
• Detailed knowledge of IOM functioning;
• Solid experience in the role and function of Staff Welfare in supporting staff to carry out their duties; and,
• In-depth knowledge of UN operations and activities.
• Gain experience in an international organization, including management and international cooperation activities, as well as understanding the dynamics of international working groups.
The Junior Professional Officer will have funding available that will allow him/her to attend relevant workshops and trainings for developmental purpose.
• Internationally recruited professional staff are required to be mobile. For this staff category, candidates who are nationals of the duty station’s country cannot be considered eligible.
• The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.
• Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment or visa requirements and security clearances.
