APM Terminals Cape Town – Inland Services currently has a vacancy for a Yard and Logistics Manager, to manage depot and transport services and drive business performance.
APM Terminals Cape Town is responsible for empty and full container storage, handling and container repair as well as a trucking operation whose primary activity is to transport international import and export containers. The operation predominantly provides a service to the shipping lines as well as clearing agents, transporters and cargo owners.
This position is operational in nature, with specific focus on driving operational performance, taking accountability for and improving operational effectiveness.
This position may require overtime and weekend work

Key responsibilities
PURPOSE
*The purpose of this role is to perform the duties of a Yard & Logistics Manager located in Cape Town, South Africa.
*This position is accountable for managing third party logistics providers, warehouse and yard capacity planning and ensuring that the customer’s requirements are met.
*This position shall be responsible for managing operational activities within the branch, evaluating and implementing cost saving initiatives and maximising branch operational performance and productivity.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
OPERATIONS
*Manages the daily operations according to the agreed operating principles of the business & relationships with customers.
*Contributes input to development in technology & systems as applicable to improve efficiencies in cost, productivity & customer service.
*Responsible for operational performance and improvements.
*Convene daily operations discussions with operational team.
*On a daily/weekly basis review operational reports and sign-off on discrepancies.
*Produce weekly and monthly operational reports with explanation and corrective action on performance.
*Responsibility that all managers and labour in the operation are trained in best operation practices with regards to advanced operations strategies and new technology.
*Effective sub-contractor management.
*Warehouse capacity planning, taking into account long term and short term requirements.
*Responsible for maintaining inventory based on FIFO.
*Manage operational KPI’s ensuring that high service levels are maintained.
*Develop and improve operational planning process.
*Acts as a contact person for customers, suppliers and service providers on an operational level.
*Responsible for managing the flow of traffic through the branch.
*Ensure the Depot Management System is used to support and run the operations of the depot.
*Ensure that all Containers over 90 days have storyline and are prioritized through the repair cycle.
*Strive to achieve OOS targets.
*Identify potential problems at an early stage to ensure contingencies are put in place to allow business and service to our customers to be conducted without interruptions.
*Assists with projects as and when required.
*Day to day management of the transportation department.
*Ensure effective forward planning through direct and regular interaction with cross-functional planning and operations teams.
*Define the standard operating practice for the branch.
*Ensure Customer service is of the highest standard and that losses to the company are kept to a minimum.
*Drive the implementation of improvements in transport operations to achieve significant gains in efficiency.
*Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations governing vehicle safety, environmental controls on fuel emissions, driver hours, customs requirements, and transportation.
HSSE & RISK
*Recognize and respond to the needs of the business in respect of HSSE and risk management, ensuring that preventative measures are in place.
*Implement and maintain operational legal compliance in respect of Health, Safety, Security and Environment.
*Ensure that CMO is updated regularly.
*Manage risk of the business through effective security controls and procedures.
*Implement and drive HSSE initiatives to be industry leaders with regards to safety and security.
HR
*Identify and address training needs on an annual basis and monitor monthly.
*Effective people management through maintaining a culture of motivation and respect.
*Adhere to the performance management cycle for all immediate sub-ordinates.
*Yearly and Quarterly reviews of staff progress.
We are looking for
*Appropriate tertiary qualification, preferably in logistics.
*5 years’ experience, 3 of which in Management capacity.
*Good knowledge of supply chain logistics
*Ability to work in a highly pressurized environment
*Possess effective analytical, people, reporting and problem solving skills.
*High energy levels and must possess a passion for logistics and people.
*Requires ability to use computerized operation software system(s).
*Has full knowledge of international standards of safe working practices within the industry as well as occupational health and safety laws.
