Position: Refugee Response Communications Specialist
Report to: Response Director
Location: Arua, West Nile, Uganda
Purpose of the position:
Produce rapid information, compelling needs and impact-focused content for refugee response communications, marketing and accountability needs in Uganda.
Major Responsibilities:
Emergency Communications.
-Design and implementation of communication strategy and plans for both refugee response;
-Closely work with the Response Director, Communications Manager and key staff to ensure the successful implementation of communications goals in alignment with the national and regional office communications strategies.
-Provide resources and communications support for media visits, interviews with national and international media
-Timely delivery of quality stories, photos, and media interviews from the field and or with official spokespeople.
-Publication of produced stories/images on WV channels for awareness and resources development (local and international grants) during emergencies
-Monitoring and proactively respond to reputation risks and engage relevant staff when issues arise.
-Contribution to reaching emergency-related targets.
Resources Gathering
-Use of internal systems (Kissflow, DMC, CML, MRC, WVRelief), Global Media chat room and new digital platforms and capturing devices
-Positioning of response advocacy issues and programs
-Producing content for fundraising and reporting purposes
Management of visitors
-Manage all logistics, planning, community mobilization, communications requests and follow-up for international visitors to the Response areas
Capacity Building
-Participate in learning programs like the spokespersons’ training, National Disaster Management Training (NDMT) and Regional Disaster Management Training (RDMT) for staff development and enable key staff effective communicators and media spokespeople during emergencies
-Build the capacity of the field staffs and the Communications Officer to produce content, host high profile visits and produce brand affirming materials.
Qualifications: Education/Knowledge/Technical Skills and Experience
-With Bachelor Degree in Communications, Journalism or other related courses
-Minimum 3 years professional experience in media and communications, journalism, and/or public relations in a multi-cultural, child-focused, non-profit/corporate, and/or humanitarian organization.
-Basic rescue/security training
-Excellent English language writing skills
-Proven document design skills, including the design of infographics
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
-Humanitarian/Disaster communications experience
-Management of video productions in emergency contexts
-Media relations and receiving recorded or live TV/radio interviews during emergencies
-Digital photography/videography (emphasis on photojournalistic compositions and mastery of video production process)
-Preparing monthly and post- emergency response reports
-News/feature writing
-Social media
-Operation of mobile/smart phones
-MS Offices and Image applications (Final Cut Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premier Pro, etc.)
-Media relations, networking and interpersonal skills
-Purposive branding and messaging
-Desktop publishing/basic design and layout (Adobe Indesign)
