UNICEF China Health, Nutrition and WASH Programme works with the Government of China to share international experiences and best practices and adapt them to a local context to ensure the health and well-being for every woman, newborn, child and adolescent. We aim to ensure that all births are safe; all newborns are healthy; and babies and children are well nourished, free from injury and violence, protected from diseases, grow up in a clean environment and develop to their full potential.

The Nutrition and Food System program officer will be responsible for programmes focused on improving nutrition among infants and young children. By leveraging support of private and public-sector partners, the Nutrition officer will be accountable for technical and administrative support and management of activities throughout the programming process.

The position will focus on improving infant nutrition by piloting workplace programs with private sector partners, to strengthen breastfeeding. By advocating for and implementing workplace programs that support family friendly policies like maternity protection, parental leave, breaks for breastfeeding and early child care for children, the position will seek to expand the participation and engagement of private sector actors in contributing to child nutrition.

S/he will also be responsible to advocate for policies, strategies and programs that can improve diets of young children. These include action that focus on promoting legislation and policies that seek to restrict marketing of unhealthy foods to children, clear food labeling and consumer education to influence purchasing behaviors. S/he will conduct operations research on how to make markets work for nutrition, including the use of taxes to reduce consumption of sugar sweetened beverages, for example.

How can you make a difference?

We are looking for a dynamic professional with a background in business, marketing, or public health with excellent communication and partnership building skills. Your task to strengthen the legislative, policy environment that can enable improvements in child nutrition. A key role is to strengthen UNICEF’s engagement with public and private sector actors including the food, nutrition and beverage industry. Specifically, tasks will focus on:

  • Establish partnerships with government agencies, private sector companies, associations and to strengthen Family Friendly Workplace movement in China. Create stronger links across ministries and public institutions to support policies related to maternity protection, paid parental leave and breastfeeding rooms/ spaces as a core component of early childhood development.
  • Work with multi-sectors to promote/create Family Friendly Workplaces and  ’10m2 of love’ breastfeeding rooms in demonstration cities/areas.
  • Promote the design of nutrition sensitive actions with government counterparts to reduce consumption of unhealthy foods such as labeling, marketing restrictions, consumer education
  • Work in partnership with government to strengthen monitoring and surveillance of industry practices that impact the promotion of healthy diets for children.
  • Support operations research, to identify actions that can build healthy food environments for children, using tax regulations standards for food labeling and restrictions on marketing of unhealthy foods to children

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in one of the following fields: Business, Marketing, or public health, nutrition, agriculture, social sciences or other relevant discipline
  • At least 2-5 years of relevant professional experience, including in the private sector
  • Strong networking and partnerships building skills
  • Experience with management and coordination of projects
  • Prior experience in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility, Public Private Partnership are considered an asset
  • Fluency in English and Chinese is required
