How can you make a difference?
The specific objectives include:
To conduct a desk review to understand the program context and identify what is already known and documented about maternal nutrition in Somalia and to identify gaps and priority research areas in relation to nutrition among women of childbearing age, with a particular focus on gender-related concerns
To carry out an analysis of the key determinants of maternal nutrition covering the domains of demand, supply, enabling environment and quality using FGDs and in-depth individual interviews
To identify barriers to achieving improved nutritional status among women of childbearing age with particular focus on gender-related barriers and determinants of maternal nutrition in target communities and select entry points for gender-transformative activities.
To select specific issues to be addressed during the programme cycle, based on their criticality, scale and impact for investment
Activities/Deliverables:
To conduct desk research and provide a short report summarizing:
Existing known determinants of maternal nutrition covering the domains of demand, supply, enabling environment (including gender-related barriers) and quality
Existing evidence in relation to micronutrient status and intake among women, including details on the promotion of multiple micronutrient supplements
Identified gaps and specific themes to be addressed during the field research phase
To share a detailed data collection methodology and work plan for review
To train the data collection team, pretest the survey, standardize and finalize it
To conduct and analyze field research (in-depth individual interviews and FGDs) on the key determinants of maternal nutrition in the domains of demand, supply, enabling environment and quality
To identify barriers to achieving improved nutritional status among women of childbearing age with particular focus on gender-related barriers and determinants of maternal nutrition in target communities, and select entry points for gender-transformative activities.
To produce a comprehensive report including the following:
Executive Summary
Introduction
Background
Aims and Objectives
Methodology
Results
Discussion
Recommendations and Conclusion
To provide a coded and organised evidence table of data collected during field research, summarizing FGD and in-depth individual interview transcripts
To share draft report with UNICEF for review and feedback
To finalize report following feedback from UNICEF and MoH
To prepare a PowerPoint presentation of the work undertaken and findings for validation by the Ministry of Health.
To present and defend the findings of the report at Nutrition Cluster meeting
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
An advanced degree in any related field in Nutrition or Public Health, Behavior Change, Sociology, Gender Studies or Anthropology (Essential)
A minimum of five (5) years of proven experience in program review and evaluation (Essential).
At least five years previous experience in nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programming (Essential)
Previous and proven experience in qualitative research methods (Essential)
Ability to access and overnight in Gedo and Banadir regions of Somalia (Essential)
Fluency in English and Somali (Essential)
Experience with Somali populations (Essential)
Excellent interviewing and facilitation skills, particularly with regard to gender considerations, including experience in discussing sensitive topics such as FGM and gender based violence
Demonstrated experience in conducting gender-mixed and gender-specific focus group discussions.
Ability to produce technically sound, well-written reports in English
Prior experience with UN and other international organizations and exposure to UNICEF’s work
Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
