Title West Africa Marketing and Communications Internship

Reporting to Regional Director, West Africa and Engagement Officer in the UK

Location Dakar, Senegal

Duration 6 months

Salary Practical Action will contribute to accommodation and living expenses in Dakar and will provide private health insurance.

SPECIFIC JOB PURPOSE
To be the focal point for communications activities in West Africa, delivering our strategy and raising our profile in the region.

WHO?S THIS ROLE FOR?

We are looking for a dynamic graduate who wants to get direct exposure to international development and consultancy work (with a focus on technology, energy access, agriculture and livelihoods) and who is interested in a career in the area of marketing and communications in the sector.

SCOPE OF ROLE
In West Africa Practical Action Practical Action deliver impact through consulting and knowledge-based work. This includes signature pieces in Benin, Mali, Togo, Burkina Faso and Senegal focused on the sectors of energy access, agriculture and climate information sources. For the 2018-2021 timeframe, we aim for our work in the region to expand in more countries in the ECOWAS region and to revolve around:

    • Facilitating donors, governments and other institutions to improve their understanding and uptake of the best suited technologies and approaches for increasing resilience.
    • Working with private sector and others to improve and ensure understanding of the complexity agricultural market systems and the role that energy access and information systems can play to improve lives and livelihoods, from small agri-businesses to the poorest and most marginalized.
    • Catalyzing positive change using technologies to build more equitable, sustainable and resilient systems that deliver on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable.
  • Evidence gathering in collaboration with businesses, experts, universities, governments and others on what works, what doesn?t and how to replicate and scale successful business models.

The organisation is going through a global rebranding process which will be officially launched in early 2019.

The Communications Intern is a new role responsible for driving brand awareness and engagement with new and existing audiences in Western Africa. With the support from the UK Marketing and Communications team, you will roll out the new communications plan in the region, network with external stakeholders and create engaging content that tells the Practical Action story to our external audiences and inspires action.

JOB DELIVERABLES

    • Support the Regional Director and the UK Communications team to develop a one year communications strategy for the West Africa office.
    • Work closely with the UK Marketing and Communications team to roll out the new brand
    • Manage and produce excellent digital content (i.e. website, blog, social media)
    • Produce excellent content for publications, presentations and website
    • Promote project work in Western Africa, identify the best stories and tell them in an engaging way to targeted audiences
    • Actively engage and build new relationships with stakeholders such as corporates, partners and associations in order to build our brand in the region and create new partnerships
    • Organise a stakeholder event to promote our flagship work
    • Support technical team in consulting and project assignments
  • Any other duties requested by the Regional Director, West Africa / UK Engagement Officer

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
You will report directly to the Regional Director, West Africa
You will also report to the UK Engagement Officer and work closely with the rest of the UK Marketing and Communications department.

LINE MANAGEMENT OR SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
PR agency or consultants if required

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

There is a budget for communications activities delivery in the region. You will be responsible for managing part of it and to ensure any work quoted for is signed off by the Regional Director, West Africa and delivered to time and the quality expected.

KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Level of Educational achievement required: Ideally Master?s degree in development studies,
marketing, communications, PR, journalism or similar

Specific skills required

    • Excellent skills in written and spoken French and English
    • Excellent oral, listening and visual communication skills
    • Creating content that works for target audiences
    • Public speaking and presenting
    • Research
    • Ability to work as a team, with colleagues at varying levels and experience
    • Reporting back effectively to internal stakeholders on progress, successes and learnings
    • You approach work with dynamism, creativity and collaboration
    • Networking to create opportunities for creating support and brand awareness
  • Ability to work independently, without much supervision

Desirable

    • Experience in organising events
  • Experience in website management and social media

Specific experience required

    • Some understanding of international development
  • Building relationships with partners in order to create brand awareness
