Director of Programmes
Location: lilongwe, Malawi
Company: Plan International
The Organisation
Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.
We believe in the power and potential of every child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it’s girls who are most affected.
Working together with children, young people, our supporters and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.
We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood. And we enable children to prepare for – and respond to – crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge.
We have been building powerful partnerships for children for over 80 years, and are now active in more than 70 countries.
The Opportunity
As the Director of Programmes, you will lead the development, design and implementation of an ambitious Country Strategy by setting overall direction and leading a high performing team. You will ensure that programme, influencing work and projects are focussed on gender transformation and equality for girls. You will strategically build relationships and represent Plan at a national level among Government, local and international society.
In this role, you will ensure accountability for meeting demanding targets and maintaining alignment with Plan’s global strategy. You will drive efforts to deliver positive change for girls through advocating, campaigning and communicating at a national level. Equally, you will also ensure the country-programme operating model is fit for purpose, there is the right funding mix to achieve Plan’s ambition, key business processes are in place and organisational values are embedded in all programming work. You will lead a motivated team, ensure programme compliance, and be ready and able to respond to emergency and development needs of the most marginalised children, especially girls.
The Individual
We are looking to recruit an individual with a Master’s degree in any development field of study with over 10 years’ experience in managing complex and diverse programmes leading multiple highly specialized and non-specialized teams. You will have proven experience of exercising leadership functions with increasing responsibility in an international environment related to development. You will have a demonstrable understanding of child rights and gender in development concepts and you will also have knowledge of sustainable community development and participatory approaches and practice in development and humanitarian contexts.
To be successful in this role you will have knowledge of programming in challenging environments with a good understanding and appreciation of the historical, security, political environment, economic, social/religious and humanitarian context in Malawi or a comparable environment. You will have significant experience of working with diverse teams and building strong relationships with people located across the world and you will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. You will have significant experience of information management and reporting and you will also have expertise and experience in leading the development of an organisation-wide complex and diverse annual budget.
