Paid Internship opportunity

Job no: 523863
Work type: Internship
Location: Switzerland
Categories: Emergency Programme, Internship

Background

UNICEF’s role in emergencies is to protect children and women, ensure the rigorous application of international standards covering their rights and provide them with assistance. UNICEF works with many partners to ensure that the assistance is reliable, effective and timely. UNICEF integrates approaches to emergency programmes and policies throughout its Headquarters divisions and concentrates coordination within the Office of Emergency Programmes (EMOPS), based in New York and Geneva.

As UNICEF, we are strongly committed to putting affected families, children and young people at the centre of our work, as reflected in UNICEF’s Core Commitments for Children, in the recently revised Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) commitments on Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) and in the World Humanitarian Summit’s “Grand Bargain” commitments. These are central elements for improving the quality and effectiveness of our humanitarian and development programmes, and ensuring affected communities can fulfil their rights to participate and be heard. However, efforts on AAP at country, regional and global levels remain ad hoc and not pursued with a coherent approach, and the feedback collected from affected communities does not sufficiently inform UNICEF’s programmes.

Building on existing good practices in country programmes and drawing from the AAP Framework “putting people at the centre of humanitarian action” developed in 2017, UNICEF is embarking upon an ambitious, organization-wide process to scale-up accountability to affected populations. Detailed plans are captured in the business case for scaling up AAP in UNICEF, approved in May 2018 by UNICEF Regional and Division Directors.  A Steering Group is set to guide the process. The Community Engagement and Accountability Unit in EMOPS Geneva,  is leading this process.
