Organizational SettingThe FAO Representation in Uganda (FRUGA) provides technical assistance to the Government of Uganda in the agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related sectors. Under the south to south cooperation framework, FAO Representation in Uganda is to implement a project “Capacity Development on Sustainable Soil Management for Africa (1) – Uganda” in collaboration with national partner institutions. The project, in Uganda, focuses on soil laboratory development, sustainable soil management and knowledge sharing between global and regional partnerships. The Global Soil Partnership Secretariat based at FAO in Rome will provide the overall guidance.
The national consultant will provide guidance, technical advice and operational support for the technical implementation of the project and reporting.
Reporting LinesThe Soil Management Specialist work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative, the technical supervision of the Project Manager based at FAO HQ and operational guidance by programme team in Uganda.
Technical FocusThe Soil Management Specialist will focus on sustainable soil management, soil data and information management, soil mapping, awareness raising, communication, facilitation of workshops for regional and national awareness and training events.  

Tasks and responsibilitiesFacilitate the organization of technical workshops and national meetings;Collaborate in, provide technical backstopping and ensure the quality / effectiveness of capacity development and knowledge sharing activities such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information and learning materials;Support capacity building on soil laboratory base on the framework of GLOSOLAN in Uganda;Provide scientific and technical support on soil sampling and analysis, and fertilizer use and recommendation, and fertilizer quality assessment;Conduct a field experiments and demonstrations of fertilizers use to evaluate the effects of fertilization on crop yield.Support the soil courses development and establishment of EduSOILS;Support the implementation of Code of Conduct for the Use and Management of Fertilizers in Uganda and policy brief development.Compile and submit progress reports as per the reporting requirements for the project.Undertake other responsibilities as shall be assigned within the framework of the project.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements   Advanced university degree in agronomy, soil science, agriculture or related discipline
Minimum five years of relevant experience in soil management or soil fertility;Proficiency in English is obligatory.National of Uganda.
