Chemonics seeks multiple positions for the anticipated Department for International Development (DFID) Partnership for Strengthening Malawi’s Education System activity. This four-year activity will improve numeracy outcomes for children in lower primary school in Malawi. By improving service delivery to ensure that more girls and boys — especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds — progress through and complete primary school with measurable improvements in learning outcomes, the activity will ensure that Malawian citizens have the foundations and skills to fulfill their potential and contribute towards national development. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.
Positions and Qualifications:
Team Leader
A master’s degree in international education, non-formal and/or other alternative education approaches, basic education, teacher training, and/or social/behavioral sciences, or another related degree
Minimum of ten years of experience managing activities of similar scope for international development assistance programs; local Malawian contextual knowledge preferred
Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible supervisory work experience that involved direct leadership of professional and support staff, oversight and evaluation of staff performance and deliverables, and contract management
Demonstrated knowledge of DFID project management, including DFID rules, regulations, and reporting requirements
Demonstrated leadership skills in collaborating with other donors, host country institutions, and international organizations
Leadership in local capacity development, including working with local partners on the ground
Demonstrated understanding of the technical activities, including improved capacity building in monitoring and evaluation, experience working with and within communities implementing activities, and demonstrated work experience institutionalizing activities with recipient governments
A strong understanding of monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL)
Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
Fluency in English required; Chichewa proficiency preferred
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Advisor
A master’s degree in monitoring and evaluation field
Eight years of experience working in the monitoring and evaluation sector, including a minimum of five years of experience with MEL for numeracy assessments and analysis
Demonstrated experience in overseeing MEL systems of broadly comparable scale and scope to that required for the
Strengthening Malawi’s Education System activity
Minimum of five years of demonstrated experience in data collection, processing, and ensuring data quality in a related field
Demonstrated relevant technical abilities necessary for high-quality monitoring and evaluation
Strong demonstrated capacities for spatial analysis, including the use of geographic information systems
Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
Fluency in English required; Chichewa proficiency preferred
Numeracy Specialist
Master’s degree in international education, preferably in mathematics, non-formal and/or other alternative education approaches, basic education, teacher training, and/or social/behavioral sciences
Minimum of four years of relevant professional experience working on numeracy instruction in primary education
Minimum of two years of experience in designing and coordinating trainings in numeracy
Knowledge of the Malawian education system preferred
Experience on DFID or other donor-funded programs preferred; experience working with non-governmental organizations and national and local governments required
Outstanding leadership, management, and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
Fluency in English required; Chichewa proficiency preferred
Community Mobilization and Engagement Specialist
A master’s degree in international education, non-formal and/or other alternative education approaches, basic education, teacher training, and/or social/behavioral sciences
Minimum of five years of demonstrated experience in community mobilization and engagement
Experience mobilizing parent support to students’ acquisition of numeracy skills, particularly students enrolled in early grades of primary education
Experience developing training materials for communities in support of early grade numeracy activities, especially in the assessment of reading skills
Ability to interact and build relationships with stakeholders, especially organizations, departments, and institutions that complement the acquisition of reading skills at the school and community levels
Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
Fluency in English required; Chichewa proficiency preferred
