The internship can be conducted on remote. The intern selected will be working for the Office of the United Nations for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) in the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat. Established in 2002, UNOWAS has primary responsibility in the area of preventive diplomacy, good offices and political mediation and facilitation efforts in West Africa and the Sahel. UNOWAS also works to consolidate peace and democratic governance in countries emerging from conflict or political crises.
UNOWAS works closely with the African Union, ECOWAS, the Mano River Union, the Lake Chad Basin Commission, the Gulf of Guinea Commission, the G5 Sahel, as well as other regional partners to support regional solutions to cross-cutting threats to peace and security, such as terrorism and violent extremism, transnational organized crime, piracy, and maritime insecurity.
UNOWAS assists regional institutions and member states to enhance their capacities to promote good governance and respect for the rule of law, human rights, and the mainstreaming of gender in conflict prevention.
Through high level political advocacy, UNOWAS supports the implementation of the United Nations Integrated Strategy for the Sahel, endorsed by the Security Council in June 2013. The strategy includes a range of programs and initiatives in the areas of Governance, Security and Resilience.

The internship will last a maximum of 6 months.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five (5) days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Duties of the intern include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research and drafts analytical reports, notes, and other documents related to the mandate of UNOWAS;
  • Support the drafting of reports, background briefs, talking points, correspondence, speeches and other communications products as required;
  • Provide coordination and substantive support to meetings, workshops and conferences;
  • Contribute to activities related to funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports etc.) and preparation of related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.);
  • Attends conferences and meetings of interest to UNOWAS, and provides verbal and written briefing notes to colleagues;
  • Supports the office’s engagement with relevant interlocutors and partners;
  • Contributes to the team’s day-to-day tasks as needed, including administration and logistical matters;
  • Performs other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Interested candidates must be pursuing or pursued their degree in areas related to this Job Opening, including but not limited to, international relations, political science, law, economics, peace and conflict studies, or related.

Job – Specific Qualification

Relevant training, education and/or experience in research on affairs affecting peace and security and political affairs in West Africa and the Sahel is desirable.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Excellent drafting skills and experience in research and sound writing of highly varied thypes of products, including reports, background briefs, talking points, correspondence, speeches and preparatory documents for workshops and conferences are desirable. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in both English and French is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
