How can you make a difference?

In 2019, the UNICEF Rwanda Communication, Advocacy and Partnerships [CAP] Section has planned several projects which require dedicated human resources support. Several short-term interns are required for various upcoming projects, including but not limited to:

Field monitoring of Communication for Development initiatives, such as community mobilisation for the Ebola response, community theatre outreach with partners Mashirika and Urunana, and listening clubs for the Itetero radio show;

Monitoring of the volunteer initiative in Ngororero District, which focuses on preventing school drop-outs;

Creating stories on ECD in the tea sector;

Field monitoring during Knowledge-Attitudes-Practices survey interviews in the tea sector;

Media monitoring of UNICEF in Rwanda;

Field monitoring and collaboration with The New Times on the “Aspiring Journalists” initiative;

Social media content development and translation into Kinyarwanda; and

Logistical support for donor visits.

Scope of Work

Each intern will be responsible for helping the CAP section create and package compelling digital content to engage audiences in a dynamic, interactive and meaningful way and spark conversations around issues related to UNICEF’s mandate.

Under the guidance of the Chief of CAP and relevant CAP staff member, each intern will:

Develop a work plan with their team counterpart, outlining responsibilities for the duration of their volunteer term and to understand CAP section work.

Identify key digital opportunities and influencers so that social networking can support advocacy objectives.

Complete all tasks as requested, in line with the work plan and relevant project timelines.

Participate in group trainings as requested.

General conditions

This internship is based in Kigali but may include travel to UNICEF field project sites. The intern will use his or her own computer, but office space and other relevant materials in the execution of assignments will be provided by UNICEF.

Interns are not considered as staff members. Notwithstanding this status, they shall observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions and procedures and directives of UNICEF.

Interns shall respect the impartiality and independence required of UNICEF and shall not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to UNICEF.

Unless otherwise authorized by the receiving office/division, interns may not communicate at any time to the media or to any institution, person, Government or any external source any information which has become known to them by reasons of their association with UNICEF. They may not use any such information without the written authorization, and such information may never be used for personal gain. These obligations do not lapse after the end of the internship.

UNICEF accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during the internship, including while on duty travel. Interns must demonstrate a proof of medical insurance prior to the beginning of the internship.

Interns are personally responsible for obtaining any required visa, covering the entire period of their internship. If necessary, UNICEF will support the process by providing relevant documents such as the proof of internship.

Interns shall be paid a monthly stipend as per internal guidelines.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have:-

Be enrolled in, or have recently completed (within two years), a degree programme in an undergraduate school in social science, marketing, journalism, international affairs, communications, or other related field.

Applicants should provide academic results (transcripts) for the level of education completed.

Fluency in spoken and written English. Fluency in Kinyarwanda is also preferred.

Previous experience working with UNICEF, other UN agencies or development partners would be an asset.

Strong writing skills and the ability to create powerful stories highlighting UNICEF’s work.

Ability to work on tight deadlines and proactively seek guidance on projects.

Consistently achieves high-level results, managing and delivering projects on-time.

Proven ability to conceptualize, plan and execute ideas and projects.
