The Falcon Awards for Disease Elimination: The Climate Edit

The Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE) is launching a second iteration of the awards the Falcon Awards for Disease Elimination – The Climate Edit, a global initiative which aims to expand the evidence base regarding the intersection of disease elimination and climate.

Goals
  • The Falcon Awards for Disease Elimination – The Climate Edit to expand the evidence base areound the climate health nexus by commissioning research at the intersection between Infectious disease and climate change. The four overarching goals of this round of awards are:
    • Elevate consideration of Infectious diseases in the climate change discourse and drive momentum towards improved understanding of the intersection between infectious disease and climate.
    • Support fonnative research to enhance understanding of infectious diseases within the climate-health nexus and Inform potential intervention design.
    • Disseminate knowledge to increase understanding and catalyse action in the climate-health space.
    • Cultivate partnerships with research institutions exploring the impacts of climate change on the transmission, control, elimination, and eradication of Infectious diseases

Through the awards, GLIDE will provide catalytic support to researchers to examine new and under-explored areas of the climate and infectious disease nexus.

The winning projects will be showcased in November 2023, when the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP28). COP28 presents an ideal opportunity to highlight the impact of climate change on infectious diseases, enhance understanding and catalyse action.

Award Information
  • Up to ten winners will be announced during Spring 2023 following an evaluation by a Scientific Panel comprised of global health and climate experts.
  • Each winner will receive a sum of up to $USD 50,000 to undertake a formative research project over a period of six months in the run-up to COP28. The research outcomes must contribute to the evidence base regarding the intersection of disease elimination and climate and contribute to local understanding of climate and health issues.

  • Cultivate partnerships with research institutions exploring the impacts of climate change on the transmission, control, elimination, and eradication of infectious diseases
Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicants must be associated with an organisation or organised initiative from one of the following domains:
    • National or regional academic or research institutions
    • Public, or private or non-governmental sector institutions
    • Coalitions or networks of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), philanthropic foundations and Coalitions or networks of CSOs
    • Public Private Partnerships (PPPs)
    • Other interested parties with demonstrated experience relevant to the intersection of infectious disease and climate change
    • Eligible applications are those that aim to provide catalytic support to researchers around the world to examine new and under-explored areas of the climate and infectious disease nexus. They particularly welcome exploratory, innovative, and community driven research proposals.
