As an Epidemiologist, you will work as part of a core team working on a three-year OFDA funded project ‘READY’ which aims to augment capacity for humanitarian emergencies of infectious diseases with epidemic or pandemic potential.

Working as an Epidemiologist in the Humanitarian Public Health Team at Save the Children UK you will have a matrix management arrangement to the Lead/Senior Technical Adviser in the READY Consortium. You will investigate, collate and verify data in key countries and regions to determine trends in collaboration with John Hopkins University (JHU), Ministries of Health and other relevant partners. In addition you will:

• Support the READY team to analyse networks, guidelines, tools and initiatives, identify critical gaps and develop a work plan to address them, so that Save the Children and its consortium partners are able to respond to large-scale disease outbreaks or pandemics
• Assess current global health, animal health, and other key sector indicators and frameworks in order to develop plans to address gaps in Early Warning and Response (EWAR) and surveillance systems
• Provide technical support and assist in the development and maintenance of monitoring and surveillance tools, datasets, dashboards and maps in collaboration with Save the Children’s IMPACT (DHIS2) team, WHO and other local and regional response tools
• Co-lead, with the World Health Orgnisation (WHO), the EWAR working group in order to contribute to revision of guidelines, development of trainings and longer term associated outcomes
• Provide technical support and leadership to the development and rolling out of outbreak scenarios and simulations.

To be successful you will have an MSc in epidemiology, public health or biostatistics or equivalent field experience with a background in infectious disease prevention and response. As well as being a strong team player, you should have excellent oral and written communication skills in English.  Other languages will be an asset.  Experience with mobile data collection and visualisation software is also essential. In addition you will have:

• Demonstrable relevant professional experience, including data management, data collection and surveys and an ability to design and implement surveillance and other data collection systems for monitoring epidemics
• Proven practical skills with Epi-info, Excel and SPSS and IT skills (Word, PowerPoint)
• Experience working with DHIS 2
• Experience working in hardship or challenging environments
• A proven capacity to supervise, train and coach staff.
