The Society of National Geography is requesting proposals for “Conservation Technologies Grant Program” to support New Methods of Monitoring Ecosystem Health.

The goal of this RFP is to improve monitoring of ecosystem health by funding innovative tools and technologies that have achieved successful prototypes and are ready for field testing and/or scaling up. Because of the complexity and interconnectedness of global environmental systems, being able to apply a tool or technology to diverse locations is crucial.

The planet’s ecological systems are in peril due to climate change and other human impacts. Their ability to understand how ecological systems respond to climate change and human impact is limited by their ability to observe these systems.

National Geographic supports the development, testing, and scaling of cutting-edge technologies that help us explore the world in new ways and transform the fields of exploration, science, and conservation.

Priorities

Priority will be given to projects that have achieved prototype stage and are doing one or more of the following:

• Develop tools or capabilities needed to generate data and insights on ecosystem health, biodiversity distribution, patterns, and trends
• Create or reimagine sensing modalities that can be applied to determine ecological health
• Implement new processing techniques that can apply breakthroughs in data mining and machine learning to glean new ecosystem health insights from existing data streams
• Develop low-cost, scalable, long-term, robust in-situ or remote sensing modalities

Funding Information

Proposals may request $5,000 to $150,000, with clear justification for all items in the budget.
