Organizational Setting
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger.
Our goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. FAO works in over 130 countries worldwide.
The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security by reducing hunger and malnutrition, developing the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their natural resources in a sustainable manner.
The FAO Representation in South Sudan is organized around three main units: Programme, Operations and Administration. The current portfolio of projects in South Sudan includes activities related to Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Natural Resource Management, and is implemented with humanitarian, transitional and development funding. The communication unit is comprised of three staff members, and works closely with the reporting unit with two staff.
Reporting Lines
The Radio Programming Associate works under the general supervision of the FAO Representative in South Sudan and under direct supervision of the Radio Programming Specialist.
Technical Focus
FAO South Sudan is using radio and other media (video/ photography) to supplement education, training and promotional activities in various projects across the country. The activities are carried out in partnership with local media organizations and involve significant collaboration with local journalists. Radio project activities also include community radio distribution in order to ensure beneficiaries have access to the content being produced.
The Radio Programming Associate is responsible for planning and developing radio and other media programmes. The officer also assists in negotiating and forming partnerships with local media, training local journalists to implement FAO programming, conducting monitoring and evaluation activities with the beneficiaries, and assists with the distribution of radios to beneficiaries.
Duties include:
 Organizing live radio programmes for recording, including six programmes under OSRO/SSD/709/USA and programmes under TCP/SSD/3602/FMD
Summarizing training materials into short, simple and clear statements that can be packaged into Public Service Announcements for easy consumption by beneficiaries.
Working with partner radio stations in developing radio scripts and editing programmes.
Identifying experts for radio interviews through coordination with partner NGOs and the radio stations.
Tasks and responsibilities
Plan and develop radio programmes, including programme scripts;
Liaise with local radio stations to implement FAO radio programming campaigns;
Monitor local partner radio stations to ensure programmes are running according to the schedules;
Train and assisting local journalists to implement FAO programming;
Organize and facilitating monitoring and evaluation sessions with beneficiaries;
Participate in radio distribution plans, including training facilitators and beneficiaries on how to operate the radios;
Collaborate with local NGOs including those which are FAO’s implementing partners for various projects, to identify interviewees with appropriate expertise;
Prepare reports on programme activities;
Produce a feature stories about agriculture in South Sudan;
Investigate and scripting case study with the farmers;
Photograph programme activities in all locations and compiling photos;
Develop successful stories on different program activities from beneficiaries in various locations including both men and women;
Perform other related duties as required.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
 College Diploma in Journalism, Mass Communication, Public Relations or other social sciences. A Bachelor degree will be an added advantage;
A minimum of four years of proven knowledge and experience in radio programming, particularly related to agriculture, fisheries, livestock and/or general food and nutrition security;
Experience in radio production, including programme planning, finding guests, booking interviews, and writing scripts;
Fluency in English.
