The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience.  We are currently seeking to fill a three months intern position in our Paris liaison office communication team, based in Paris, France.

General Information

Duties and responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the communications officer, the candidate will perform the following duties:

1. Support the development, preparation and execution of communications and advocacy campaigns.

2. Assist in the preparation of WFP’s participation to events

3. Manage and maintain records and databases, such as journalist and media outlet contact lists, to ensure the information is accurate, organized and readily available for others to access.

4. Assist with production of advocacy material -newsletter, factsheets, brochures and printed material.

5. Social media: Develop and produce creative content for WFP French social media channels, Twitter and Facebook, and Medium, ensuring consistency with corporate messages and standards.

6. Help with translations when needed.

7. Website: Manage the French website and update it regularly with original content and translated one.

8. Maintain awareness of events on food, hunger and malnutrition, agriculture with main bodies: political, social events, NGOs, Universities, UN. Monitor events and conferences on the same themes and bring it to the attention of the team.

Qualifications and experience

• Currently enrolled with at least two years undergraduate studies completed, or recently graduated (within the past six months) (master’s in communication, political sciences or related field);

• University course attendance in the past 12 months;

• Excellent command of English and French; Working knowledge of another UN language would be an asset;

• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)

• Experience in communications, managing social media accounts, organizing events, producing compelling content for campaigns

Required soft skills/WFP Competencies:

Team spirit, good organizational and interpersonal skills, able to work independently. Experience with government, at international level, UN agencies or NGOs would be an important plus.

Working Languages

Working knowledge of English and French (proficiency/level C) is required.

Supervision (Level/Methods of Supervision)

Under the direct supervision of the Communication Officer, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be elemental part of the supervision. With the support of a comprehensive induction package and assignment of a buddy/mentor, the intern will rapidly become a productive member of the team.

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn.  Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

The security situation in France remains in line with other European Countries. There are no specific threats against the UN in France. The WFP Paris Office is housed in the headquarters of the UN agency UNESCO and therefore has a high security system. Since the end of 2018, the “yellow vest” movement, originally against the rise in fuel prices and lack of purchasing power, has crystallized as a deep social discontent in France. Populist political parties such as La France Insoumise (far left) and the Rassemblement National (far right) have gained popularity, resulting in a series of street protests. Some districts of Paris are therefore to be avoided on target days.

Terms and Conditions:

• Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.

• WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.

• WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.

• WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.

• Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
