Home based

The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with a contract duration of two years. Employment location will be home based with frequent travels to project countries.

As  Expert Humanitarian Assessments and Analysis, you will be responsible for executing, guiding and providing coaching on context analysis, conflict analysis, humanitarian needs assessments & analysis, and disaster risk analysis in Welthungerhilfe’s Country Offices or on assignments in countries where Welthungerhilfe (WHH) does not have an operational presence. You will be part of the Assessments and Analysis for Action (3A) team, which is managed by Welthungerhilfe’s Humanitarian Directorate and is comprised of two Experts Humanitarian Assessments and Analysis and one 3A Coordinator. The specific aims of the position are:

  • Increase context analysis capacities in WHH programming, and increase conflict analysis capacities to enable all WHH work to be conflict sensitive as a minimum standard
  • Increase humanitarian needs assessment and analysis for action capacities
  • Increase disaster risk analysis capacities in WHH work
  • Increase monitoring capacity of WHH programming, particularly in humanitarian and fragile contexts.

Your responsibilities

  • Undertake context analysis and conflict analysis processes and exercises with Country Offices in coordination with the Humanitarian Directorate
  • Provide effective capacity building, including coaching and training of Country Office staff in context analysis and conflict analysis
  • Support the subsequent development of updated Country Strategy or operational program documents in line with the context analysis produced
  • Contribute to the further development of context analysis and well as conflict analysis toolkits
  • Lead or support the development or adaptation of new types of both project related as well as program/strategy-related context analysis and conflict analysis as needed
  • Provide direct support to Country Offices in humanitarian needs assessments and analysis, and program development support initiatives (rapid multisectoral assessments, sector focused assessments) in consideration of GAD (Gender Age and Diversity) requirements and protection mainstreaming guiding principles
  • Capacity building in humanitarian needs assessments and analysis and Support country offices in improving MEAL processes
  • Identify relevant guidelines, minimum requirements and develop practicable toolkits for humanitarian needs assessment and analysis
  • Represent the organization in humanitarian networks and other relevant fora
  • Contribute to learning and knowledge management
  • Undertake disaster risk-analysis processes and exercises with Country Offices
  • Contribute to the further development of disaster risk analysis toolkits and support the development or adaptation of new types of program-wide disaster risk analysis

Your profile

  • A university or college degree in a relevant field
  • At least three years of professional experience in emergency relief cooperation covering programme/strategy implementation and development
  • A high degree of experience in facilitating and executing context analysis and conflict analysis processes
  • Extensive experience in undertaking humanitarian needs assessments and analysis for programme and project development as part of programme and project cycle management
  • Experience in undertaking effective monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (MEAL) processes to facilitate adaptive management in humanitarian or fragile contexts
  • Experience in data management as part of assessment and analysis processes
  • Experience in undertaking assessments and analysis of gender, age and diversity (GAD) and/or protection issues
  • Experience in leading multi-cultural teams and building the capacity of staff through training and coaching
  • In-depth knowledge of international and national humanitarian coordination mechanisms
  • Willingness to be on call in the event of an acute disaster (leaving within 48 hours of being alerted) as well as ensuring readiness for deployments of up to 3 months to support projects already underway at home and abroad
  • Excellent spoken and written English and French language skills
