Job description

The incumbent directs a wide range of commercial programs consistent with U.S. Commercial Service (CS) requirements in Senegal, including but not limited to trade and investment opportunities for U.S. firms.  Serves at the principal advisor to the Economic Chief, Deputy Chief of Mission and Ambassador as required on commercial and U.S. Department of Commerce (USCOC) matters in Senegal. Job holder is directly supervised by the Economic-Commercial Officer. Incumbent will supervise one Commercial Assistant.

Job requirements

Experience: Minimum five years of progressively responsible commercial experience in marketing, trade promotion, market analysis or international trade in governmental or private sector is required.

Job knowledge: Must have a thorough knowledge of U.S. business practices, requirements and activities in relation to trade and investment. Must have a thorough knowledge of Senegal’s economy, commercial, and industrial structure, trade and business practices, laws, regulations and policies. Must have a sound knowledge of U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service trade promotion, goals and reporting requirements. Must be familiar with U.S. Mission structure, policies and procedures.

Education Requirements: A (BA) Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business, marketing, public relations, international trade or international affairs is required.

Evaluations:

Language

  • Level IV in English and French (fluent, reading, speaking, and writing) is required. (This may be tested)
  • Level III Wolof good working knowledge is required.

Skills and abilities: Must be able to plan, organize and execute complex commercial research projects and prepare precise and accurate reports, including in depth analysis and evaluation. Must be able to develop, maintain and expand an extensive range of high-level contacts in government and private sectors.  Must be able to render sound advice impartially, employing professional judgment. Must be able to assess the economic and political environment as it relates to commercial matters/issues, to prepare briefing memoranda, background information, and speeches for use by the Chief of Mission, the Deputy Chief of Mission, and the Economic Officers on commercial activities. Must have a good working knowledge of computer software programs such as word processing, spreadsheets and databases. Must have the ability to manipulate numbers with speed and accuracy.  Use of Microsoft Word, Excel PowerPoint, and Microsoft Teams remote work technology required.

Qualifications: All applicants under consideration will be required to pass medical and security certifications.
