Org. Setting and Reporting

The Regional Office for West and Central Africa of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) provides technical support to countries in line with the mandate of the international community.
The Network of Central Authorities and Prosecutors of West Africa Against Organized Crime (WACAP) is a network of judicial cooperation made up of focal points from the 15 countries of the Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO), Mauritania and Chad.
WACAP aims to strengthen operational cooperation and the capacity of international criminal cooperation authorities in West Africa to combat all forms of organised and serious crime, including terrorism.
Focal points facilitate the exchange of information on their respective legal systems to effectively process requests for mutual legal assistance and extradition.
UNODC provides secretarial functions, technical support and network training.

The WACAP network is one of three judicial cooperation networks supported by the Member States’ Global Capacity Building Programme for the Prevention and Combating Organised and Serious (Transnational) Crime (GPTOC).
The communication component of the network must support advocacy activities, promote a strong visual identity through a graphic charter and visibility products.

The Network of Central Authorities and Prosecutors of West Africa against Organized Crime (WACAP) has an important « Communication – Visibility » component with the production and content-making component on virtual platforms.
The role of the communications and monitoring intern is to strengthen the production of communication content for the web site, by publishing three newsletters a year on MailChimp and social media for an increase in the visibility of the objectives pursued by the network, among other duties.

The communications and monitoring intern will be recruited for a period of six (06) months and will be under the direct supervision of the Head of the Justice section and the substantive guidance of the WACAP Program Specialist.
The successful candidate will be assigned to the Justice section of UNODC’s Regional Office in Dakar, Senegal.
This role would require interaction with project team members located at HQ, at the Regional Office and in Field Offices across West Africa, as well as with national and sub-regional counterparts in support of the effective implementation of the project.

The internships are UNPAID, full time – 5 days a week (40 hours a week)

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, interns may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises.
The intern must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.
The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

Responsibilities
General duties of this internship include, but are not limited to:

Provide daily support of section activities as delineated by project managers;
Support the creation, collection and formatting of training and conference presentation materials;
Draft official communication materials, press releases, speeches and articles for project team members and ROSEN management personnel;
Support the unit in helping to maintain and update the website and social media accounts;
Facilitate the production and dissemination of public information material through website, brochures, posters, letters, e-mails, and broadcasts in various languages as required reaching a wide public audience;
Contribute to the drafting and translation of relevant documents such as newsletters, progress reports, training reports, etc;
Facilitate the creation of project monitoring tools for the project;
Any other tasks included under project activities related to monitoring and communication.

Competencies

Planning and Organizing: Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor work plans, prioritize competing demands and meet tight deadlines. Excellent organizational skills, autonomy and independence.

Communication: Ability to draft clearly and concisely, to communicate effectively, including ability to prepare reports and conduct presentations by clearly formulating positions on issues, articulating options concisely, and making and defending recommendations.
Ability to use webdesign, produce digital content management and multimedia.
Familiarity with the management of social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram.
Good skills in layout software and graphic design such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Xpress.

Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different national and cultural backgrounds to achieve organizational goals.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

Applicants must
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme
(minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above)

Candidates should have relevant coursework in Law, LLM, Political Science, International Relations, Global Affairs, Public Administration, Management and/or Design, Web Development, Strategic Design and Management, Information Design, Public Relations, Media Studies, Journalism or Data Visualization.

• Be computer literate in standard software applications;
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views

Work Experience

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
For the internship, fluency in spoken and written English and French is required.
