Job Purpose

As Executive Director of Global Programmes you will sit on the Executive Leadership Team, working with colleagues to lead the organisation in line with our strategy and our agreed values and behaviours. Reporting into the CEO, you will personally lead the Global Programmes division, where your responsibility is to pursue the maximum, sustainable impact for children from SCUK’s global development and humanitarian interventions, working in close collaboration with the rest of SCUK, the wider Save the Children movement and our numerous external partners.

This role offers a unique and exciting opportunity for someone with a passion to make a difference in the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children. You must be ready to adapt to changes in external circumstances, including country crises and financial realities, as well as internal change plans not least our commitment to shift more power and resources to children, local communities and local partners. You will be a collaborative and catalytic leader with a sophisticated understanding of the current global trends in the international development landscape, social change and experience of developing and implementing programming and emergency responses globally.

Key accountabilities:

  • As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, you will have collective responsibility for developing and delivering the organisation’s strategy, plans and policies, both in terms of staff and also reporting to the Board of Trustees.
  • Undertake a leadership role on some crosscutting work, including championing one of the Staff Equality Networks and acting as climate change champion.
  • Be responsible for all leadership and management of Global Programmes Division, including people, processes, partnerships, programmes and financial resources ensuring the division strives always to maximise its impact for children and complies with its own policies and requirements agreed with donors.
  • Together with the ED for Fundraising and Marketing, you will be responsible for securing the partnerships and funding to deliver on SCUK’s priorities (with targets and accountabilities set out in the Strategic Partnerships for Impact Strategy 2022-24).
  • Working with the ED for Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns, you will co-chair the work of the World Class Impact board internally, which is responsible for making sure SCUK is on track to deliver on the high level objectives in the 2022-24 strategy, and support the success of the new 5-year global campaign for a fairer, greener future for today’s children.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across the Movement to shape our future strategic direction and guide change processes relevant to development and humanitarian programming, ensuring long term sustainable impact for children is the guiding principle, whilst setting high standards for compliance and risk.
  • Representing Save the Children externally as necessary, including to build profile and to influence discussions taking place elsewhere in line with SCUK strategic priorities, as well as to develop new partnerships that will help us to learn from others and to achieve our long term objectives for children.

Person specification:

  • Demonstrable understanding of global development, humanitarian and child rights issues relevant to Save the Children. You will be able to call on experts but must have a good grounding, committed to expanding your knowledge, and able to speak confidently and in an inspiring way about all aspects of our work.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage a large team of people at a senior level, creating a high-performance culture that matches our ambitions for children with support for staff development and wellbeing. You must be able to engage staff effectively when working remotely and in person, including split site teams.
  • Experience of strategy development and delivery – to include turning high level plans into practical and feasible programmes of work and managing multiple stakeholders. Including internal change programmes.
  • Track record of robust management of significant financial resources and operations, including ensuring compliance with regulatory rules and securing cost savings.
  • Experience of leading large scale or complex development or emergency operations in a developing country preferred (highly desirable).
  • Experience of working in a networked alliance or federation context (desirable). In many areas, your work will be delivered with or through other parts of the Movement, yet you will still be accountable for this.

  • Strategic thinker who’s driven by impact and evidence, curious to keep up to date with new ideas and innovations and sees the positive potential in change – with children as agents of change for their own future.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence and authenticity that mean you can communicate with impact to different audiences, from children and youth networks to senior political or business figures, potential funders, the media, junior staff or Save the Children partners at community level.
  • Resilient – able to cope with a senior role carrying significant responsibility, juggling competing priorities and in an area of work that exposes you to some of the toughest situations faced by children.
  • Strong commitment to Save the Children values and behaviours. You will be expected to role model SCUK’s 16 workplace behaviours and to hold others to the same standard, tackling any concerns proactively. You will help to drive delivery of SCUK’s Diversity and Inclusion strategy ‘Free to be Me’.
  • An understanding of SCUK’s policies on safeguarding children, vulnerable adults and preventing sexual abuse and exploitation, along with a clear commitment to ensure full compliance with these as well as all other mandatory policies.

Remote Working:

The majority of SCUK employees are currently working remotely within the UK in line with UK Government guidance. Commencing July 2021 we will transition to flexible and hybrid ways of working (i.e. a mixture of remote/home and office-based working) as social distancing restrictions ease.
