Job Description

The PATH Center for Malaria Control and Elimination leverages PATH’s unique blend of technical expertise, relationships, and on-the-ground knowledge to identify promising new ideas, bring together collaborators, and accelerate development of strategies and tools for elimination. This work is intended to empower national governments to pursue the goal of eliminating malaria transmission once and for all.

Our robust portfolio includes projects includes promising projects in vaccines, diagnostics, drugs—both developing new drugs and using existing drugs in new ways, as well as system and service innovations. These projects span the full development cycle, from upstream R&D to field implementation and programmatic scale up.

The CMCE’s work is powered by partnerships. We collaborate with ministries of health to strengthen health systems and create malaria-free zones; tech companies to use data in better and new ways; manufacturers to improve and develop drugs and diagnostics; global agencies like the World Health Organization; and governments to support evidence generation and policy formulation. We work closely with communities to understand local context and build skills. CMCE projects are currently supported by grants from numerous funders, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, United States Agency for International Development, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and Unitaid, among others.

CMCE is seeking a Communications Manager who will envision and execute strategic communications plans and activities that encompass PATH’s complete malaria portfolio. The Manager will report directly to the Director of Communications and Advocacy for the Programs and Innovation division where CMCE sits, with a dotted line to the Director of the Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (MNTD) program. The Manager will be a member of the CMCE and MNTD leadership teams and will also provide strategic communications advice and support to communicators and advocates across the CMCE. The Manager will contribute significantly to CMCE’s strategic vision and management, lead annual work planning for communications and advocacy, and will also be responsible for developing a mechanism to effectively coordinate communications and marketing efforts across projects within the CMCE portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of malaria strategic communications plans and activities for a $100M+ global portfolio and build visibility for PATH among target audiences in the US and around the world.
  • Contribute to and oversee the development and production of compelling written and multimedia content to showcase PATH’s malaria expertise, evidence and impact.
  • Serve as malaria focal point to ensure effective communications coordination and collaboration with the PATH External Affairs team and with other teams across the organization.
  • Oversee the translation and dissemination of evidence and experience, across geographies, to support policy change and build PATH’s reputation as a global health policy leader.
  • Represent PATH with a wide array of development partners, funders, communications working groups and official events.
  • Select, scope and manage the work (and budgets) of public affairs and communications firms, contractors and vendors, ensuring compliance with branding requirements
  • Develop, implement, and oversee a broad portfolio of communications deliverables, events, activities, budgets, and reporting in support of PATH’s malaria strategy and global engagement goals.
  • Provide strategic direction to ensure communications and advocacy activities and outputs are meeting the needs and requirements of current and prospective key investors and stakeholders.
  • Manage and supervise a high-performing global communications team, providing guidance, mentoring and career development, and ensure timely delivery and completion of high-quality communications deliverables.
  • Oversee the collection, interpretation, and analysis of communications and advocacy metrics, applying an adaptive management approach to refine and prioritize activities and strategies to improve impact.
  • Support proposal teams in reflecting the value and impact of communications and advocacy in proposals and accurately budgeting for required resources.
  • Lead media relations for PATH malaria and oversee strategic deployment and management of media and digital communications channels; support CMCE and MNTD senior leadership as a communications and advocacy adviser, providing media relations, strategic and crisis communications counsel, as needed.
  • Ensure communications activities and materials are in compliance with diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.

Required Experience

  • Undergraduate degree plus a minimum of 10 years of experience working in communications and advocacy in public health, international development or a related field. Advanced degree is a plus
  • Experience working in a global health or development organization and in integrating communications and advocacy is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of malaria and neglected tropical diseases is strongly preferred
  • Proven leadership skills and demonstrated success managing a team of communications professionals through pressure of deadlines, unpredictability, and multiple priorities
  • Proven success at developing, measuring, and executing strategic communications plans, and in deploying and leveraging a variety of media and digital communication channels and tactics to reach and engage global media, policymakers and influencers
  • Demonstrated experience in developing compelling communications content relevant to global health and/or development
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Experience working in an international context and in communicating and working with different cultures and countries. French language a plus
  • Diplomacy and tact as an advisor to senior executives and as an external representative to partners and audiences in visible roles and settings
  • Experience providing communications training and capacity building of colleagues; experience with developing-country cultures preferred
  •  Experience with budget development, management, and resource allocation
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and project management skills
  • Adept at working in a team and multi-stakeholder environment
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
  • Ability to work with a variety of work styles and personalities
  • Must have legal authorization to reside and work in one of the locations listed; Senegal or Kenya
