About DON BOSCO ASHALAYAM

Don Bosco Ashalayam is an Indian NGO founded in 1985 in the City of Joy. Its main aim is to rehabilitate street and underprivileged children, whatever their caste, religion, or gender. Ashalayam (“Homes of Hope” in Sanskrit) gives them the means to choose and build their future, as well as the opportunity to become aware of their rights. The NGO currently has 16 homes, housing over 350 children aged 6 to 24.  The children who live there took benefit from decent living conditions: healthy food, medical care and, above all, quality education through schooling or vocational training. In this way, they can regain a real childhood and prepare for the future. Ashalayam supports and accompanies children in their development until they become autonomous and independent and have (re)found their place in society.

Sport plays a fundamental role in the Ashalayam homes, helping to rebuild the bodies and minds of the children and young people. Through regular practice, the children learn the values of effort, respect, and team spirit. Rugby, introduced to Ashalayam 24 years ago, has been particularly impactful. It has allowed children to excel in the sport, join the national team, and create a united community of girls and boys from diverse backgrounds, opening up opportunities for education and professional integration.

Notably, the Ashalayam rugby team was invited to participate in the first School Rugby World Cup for under-15s in 2023, organized by the Heritage Rugby Cup. Furthermore, the Ashalayam Delegation has been invited to the Festival of Sport 2024, organized by Sport dans la Ville on the sidelines of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. These achievements highlight the significant role of sports in the development and recognition of Ashalayam’s children.
