Job Title: External Mental Health Psycho-Social Support (MHPSS) Supervisor

Code: SR–1742

Duty station: Remote – Roving

Starting date: 17/01/2021

Contract duration: 10 months

Reporting to: Europe Region Director / HoM Greece

Supervision of: n/a

Dependents: Family Duty Station

General context of the project

INTERSOS’ Migration Unit is operative in Europe with two Mobile Medical Units (MMU), providing Primary Health Care in condition of need, with two main aims: ensure health coverage to patients without proper access to local health services (migrants on the move, not integrated migrants, seasonal workers, marginalised individuals or communities) and catalyse better and more inclusive approaches by the Local Agencies for Health with a strong local institutional advocacy and a widespread grassroots movements networking.

In Foggia’s province, up to 6.500 migrants each year are exploited in agricultural seasonal work, being inhumanly, illegally treated, underpaid and living in dramatic conditions in shanty towns, occupied buildings and factories.

Since 2018 two mobile medical units are operational in 8 informal settlement, providing PHC (Primary Health Care) and awareness raising on socio-sanitary rights and health promotion.

with 2 medical doctors, 4 cultural mediators, 2 health promoters, coordinated by the project manager. Since march 2020 the project is providing COVID-19 prevention, pre-triage, identification of cases in the most exposed areas.

In Lesbos, EU and Greek policies continue to curb protection and care for vulnerable cases, and the new Greek asylum law in effect since the 1st of January 20201 has significantly diminished protection for asylum seekers. The law has restricted the right of the most vulnerable, while limiting access to their fundamental right to seek asylum and be protected from serious risks.

According to the Greek law, vulnerable people can, upon identification, be exempted from the geographical restriction that forces asylum seekers to stay on the Aegean islands. Under the new law, though, this is impossible to attain, as their asylum applications are no longer prioritized. In addition, the process of identification of vulnerabilities and consequent re-adaptation of their reception condition is undermined by the consistent shortage in medical staff.

The 2020 assessment in Mavrovouni Reception and Identification Centre (RIC), show a critical condition of single women. Over 30% have reported a vulnerability. Single parents, pregnant women, persons suffering from

disability, elderly persons, survivors of torture and rape, who have not been identified as such, are present. Among them, some had even received a first rejection of their asylum application, forcing them to the camp where they find themselves furtherly exposed to risk.

INTERSOS starts in January 2021 a project answering to the need for mental health support in the camp, especially with regards to vulnerable groups such as GBV survivors, that is significant.

Project’ staff is composed by 2 psychologists, 4 cultural mediator, 1 protection officer, coordinated by Head of Mission.
