Summary

Ground Truth Solutions is looking for a Head of Communications to work as an integral member of the core team as we scale up our activities. This position holds responsibility for managing strategic communications in support of GTS’ humanitarian reform objectives. Start date is as soon as possible, with a flexible location.

Duration: One year with possible extension

Reports to: Director

Days: Full time (40 hours per week) with option for part time (4 days)

Our mission is to ensure that people affected by crises have a say in humanitarian action, from individual aid projects to global humanitarian reform. To achieve this, we collect feedback from people at the receiving end of aid. We challenge and encourage aid agencies to use this feedback to optimise their work. We influence policymakers, governments, and aid agencies to bring change to the humanitarian, health and environmental sectors.

Main responsibilities

We are a small organisation, and as such this role will include a range of communications tasks, from the everyday to the strategic:

  • Implement GTS’ strategic communications strategy, aimed at helping GTS to meet the objectives of its 5-year organisational strategy through targeted communications and advocacy
  • Manage revision, upkeep and regular maintenance of content and structure of the GTS website
  • Demonstrably improve and maintain GTS’ social media presence, through compelling regular content on GTS’ results, data and thematic areas of influence, and engagement with the online humanitarian community
  • Lead on the regular production of the GTS newsletter and other communications products
  • Lead on the production of the GTS annual report
  • Maintain consistent and compelling voice throughout all of GTS’ communications and information products, from policy briefs to web content, supported by a style guide and understanding of organisational ‘persona’
  • Manage / grow a pool of freelancers to ensure consistent and high-quality voice, design and content standards in all GTS reports and data visualisations
  • Working with staff, leadership and thematic experts, ensure the production and dissemination of blogs and opinion pieces at strategic moments
  • Liaise with partner organisations on joint communications products and advocacy materials
  • Coordinate media engagement as needed
  • Assist in the production, editing or review of other GTS written materials where needed. This may include proposals, reports, presentations, donor communication, other
  • Help refine and implement Ground Truth’s strategy to influence humanitarian policy and practice
  • Act as a member of the Ground Truth Coordination Team (management group) and provide support or leadership in core responsibility areas (e.g. HR, finance, retreats) as well as facilitating team meetings and learning sessions

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • The ability to work proactively, creatively and flexibly to drive things forward and adjust to challenges and opportunities
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g. journalism, communications, professional writing) or equivalent experience, preferably in the humanitarian or international space
  • A minimum of 5years relevant experience in multi-channel communications or advocacy
  • Excellent writing, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with building online communities, and an ability to stay up-to-date on communications trends and opportunities
  • High level of familiarity with the humanitarian sector and humanitarian reform initiatives
  • Field experience in diverse teams in complex emergencies / environments an asset, as is experience engaging with UN Country Teams, governments, local civil society, INGOs, donors
  • Willingness to travel for work to crisis affected countries, including conflict settings
  • Ability to represent Ground Truth professionally in external relations
  • Strong organisation and coordination skills
  • Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in UN working languages an asset

What we offer

A contract with a competitive package under Austrian law or equivalent with the possibility of extension. The position will either be based at our HQ in Vienna or can be home based (with travel). GTS offers a flexible work model.
