 Organizational Setting
 The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist Governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.
The FAO Representation in South Sudan is organized around three main units: Programme, Operations and Administration. The current portfolio of projects in South Sudan includes activities related to agriculture, livestock, fisheries and natural resource management, and is implemented with humanitarian, transitional and development funding. The incumbent will contribute to the country’s programme and portfolio as foreseen in the projects.
Reporting Lines
 The Training Consultant Beekeeping/Honey Production and Processing will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative FAO South Sudan and the direct supervision of the Head of Programmes.
Technical Focus
The consultant will work under the day-to-day supervision of the Alternative Livelihoods Specialist, collaborate with the Programme, Operations and Administrative Units, and consult with the relevant Technical Units at FAO headquarters, RAF and SFE, and the Lead Technical Officer and close collaboration with the MAFS and the NBS of South Sudan.
Tasks and responsibilities
 Considering the decision making requirements to address widespread food insecurity and the prevailing constraints in terms of institutional context and technical capacity, the Consultant will:
Prepare training materials necessary to equip beneficiaries with the skills to improve beekeeping, making improved beehives using locally available materials, honey production, processing and marketing
Organize and provide training for beekeepers, honey production, processing and marketing groups across FAO’s targeted areas of operation in South Sudan, with focus on specific projects i.e. Cross Borders, SAFER and SSD.  Topics to include but not limited to;
Technical aspects of beekeeping, honey production and processing (types of beehives,  selecting sites & setting up apiaries, traditional vs improved hives, honey harvesting and when to harvest, expected yields, quality of honey, storage of honey)
Making of improved beehives using locally available materials
Beekeeping as a business, importance of quality, how to grow income
Record keeping and types of records to keep
Income, Profits and loss – how to calculate
Markets and marketing honey and honey by-products (Local markets, national and export markets)
Risks and challenges of beekeeping (stings and allergies, livestock interactions, wildlife)
Support the implementation of beekeeping and support the establishment of networks of smallholder beekeepers for collecting production data.
Support the establishment of FAO demonstration apiaries in targeted communities for demonstrating good practices in beekeeping.
Identify and map existing private sector actors to work with in developing the apiculture sector through supporting smallholder beekeepers;
Develop different business approaches and models to link all the value chain stakeholders to produce, process and market bulk quantities of honey with consistent and high quality of honey supply;
Lead the development of business plans to set up small scale processing and storage units in the production areas for bulking and market linkages with national and / or export markets;
Establish, in collaboration with appropriate national stakeholders and line Ministry new streams of collecting honey and other bee products market data implementation;
Identify capacity gaps and training needs of partners working with the organization through participation in field monitoring and support missions and assessments;
Ensure inclusive participation of State-level actors, including in the preparation for workshops, assessments and dissemination of information through State-level forums;
Support the application of quality control measures and standards and advising on improvements and review of methods and practices as appropriate in honey production and processing;
Organise and participate in national level workshops on beekeeping and honey processing;
Assist the technical leads of the projects involving beekeeping and honey processing and marketing in the delivery of outputs;
Ensure timely dissemination of information to all relevant partners involved in beekeeping and honey processing and marketing activities;
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
 Advanced university degree in one of the following fields; in Apiculture, Social Sciences, Development Studies or any other discipline relevant to the mandate of the Organization;
Significant appreciation of value chain developmental projects;
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience of a progressively responsible nature in supporting smallholder beekeepers.
Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of one of the other FAO official languages (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian), preferably Arabic.  For PSAs working knowledge of English.

Demonstrated ability to liaise and develop partnerships with UN, NGO, governmental, and private sector actors;
Breadth of experience and demonstrated ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary technical teams and guide the work of others;
Extent of relevant work experience in other African countries and in the region will be an added advantage.
