Organizational Setting
The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist Governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.
The FAO Representation in South Sudan is organized around three main units: Programme, Operations and Administration. The current portfolio of projects in South Sudan includes activities related to agriculture, livestock, fisheries and natural resource management, and is implemented with humanitarian, transitional and development funding. The incumbent will contribute to the country’s programme and portfolio as foreseen in the projects.
This position will support two of FAO South Sudan’s larger resilience projects in addition to the Emergency Livelihood Response Programme (ELRP), specifically working on activities aiming to increase sustainable fish catch and training methods for fish preservation, post-harvest and processing.
Reporting Lines
The National Communication Specialist will work under the overall supervision of the FAOR and Deputy FAOR, and in close consultation and collaboration with the FAO South Sudan Communication Unit and relevant FAO headquarters Lead Technical Unit and the relevant Project Technical Officers and Lead Technical Officer, based in the Sub-regional Coordination for East Africa (SFE).
Tasks and responsibilities
 Create and produce effective information campaigns, mostly through radio;
Map FAO activities aiming to improve visibility among, but not limited to, targeted beneficiaries and affected populations;
Facilitate a smooth production and collaboration with (community) radio stations, through effective collaboration with FAO partners, community leaders, targeted beneficiaries with related travel to the field;
Produce written articles and beneficiary stories of FAO activities for external publication;
Report and analyse CwC activities to the Communication Specialist on a weekly and monthly basis;
Attend and contribute to the South Sudan Communication with Communities in Emergencies working group (CwC WG);
Any other ad-hoc duties relating to the communication unit.
Be focal point for branded merchandise
Guide partners on visibility items — including providing training to project managers on visibility
Manage long-term agreements for corporate visibility
Write press releases
 CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST
Minimum Requirements:
An advanced degree in Communications, Media Relations, Journalism or a related field is required. A first level degree may be acceptable in lieu of an advanced degree with an additional five (5) years of qualifying experience;
Minimum of 5 years of proven knowledge and experience in radio programming;
Ability and willingness to travel to FAO and partner field sites;
Excellent writing skills in English, including the ability to write well under pressure in order to meet tight deadlines;
Working knowledge of English and of the FAO official working language for the country of assignment.
