Chemonics seeks a chief of party for USAID’s upcoming five-year Zambia Alternatives to Charcoal project. The purpose of this activity is to reduce deforestation and forest degradation in biodiverse-significant areas by promoting alternatives to charcoal. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.
Responsibilities include:
Provide leadership, technical direction, and oversight for all project activities and results
Serve as the project’s official liaison to USAID (and other donors as applicable), civil society organizations, local government officials, local partners, and universities to coordinate activities and facilitate monitoring and reporting of activity objectives and achievements
Build innovative partnerships and promote sustainable initiatives
Ensure project assistance is technically sound and appropriate, meeting planned targets and the timely completion of deliverables as well as ensuring compliance with USAID regulations and Chemonics’ policies
Oversee work planning, performance management, and strategic communications
Supervise the project’s technical and operations staff
Provide technical oversight and supervision of subcontractors and grantees, as required
Qualifications:
Advanced degree (master’s level or equivalent) in natural resource management, forestry, renewable energy, or related field
Minimum 10 years of experience implementing and coordinating large, complex projects in natural resource management or biodiversity conservation, with a focus on forestry, renewable energy, low emissions development, or alternative livelihoods development
Minimum five years of managing similarly sized international donor support programs with strong, demonstrated skills in strategic planning, management, supervision, and budgeting
Minimum five years of experience working with senior government officials, private sector leaders, and other stakeholders in natural resources management, biodiversity conservation, or enforcement of conservation regulations
Knowledge of Zambia’s environmental, social, cultural, political, and development context and an understanding of the forestry and energy sectors in Zambia strongly preferred
Experience in sub-Saharan Africa required; experience in Zambia preferred
Experience with USAID and/or other international donors preferred
Strong interpersonal and written communication skills to coordinate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
Fluency in written and oral English required
Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
