ABOUT WFP
The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve SDG2 : Zero Hunger in our lifetime. Every day, WFP works in more than 80 countries to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and young children, are able access the nutritious food they need.
The WFP Regional Bureau for Eastern and Central Africa (RBN) is based in Nairobi, and provides strategic direction, technical guidance, resource mobilization and management support to WFP operations and activities in nine countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda.
JOB PURPOSE
The Regional Gender Advisor (RGA) will lead efforts to ensure that WFP’s partnerships, programmes and activities in the Eastern and Central region of Africa promote and facilitate greater food and nutrition security, using gender-sensitive and gender-transformative approaches. The RGA serves as a resource person for the nine other gender specialists in the region, and provides strategic advice and operational support to leadership teams in the country offices. The RGA participates in regional and international fora to represent WFP where the nexus of gender and food and nutrition security is discussed. Finally, the RGA will provide advice to the Food Systems team lead to identify the opportunities to improve gender equality and enhance women’s empowerment in the areas of climate resilience and livelihoods. The position reports directly to the head of WFP’s Climate, Resilience and Food Systems team.
STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and training: Bachelor’s degree in gender studies, sociology, anthropology, or any related social or natural science.
Work Experience:  Five or more years of progressively responsible professional work experience in the gender, humanitarian or development field,
Proven experience with gender-responsive programming, the rights-based approach rights and/or gender- based violence highly desired.
Knowledge of or experience working in the area of climate adaptation, resilience-building and livelihoods is a plus.
Language: Fluency in both oral and written English. Intermediate knowledge of other UN language would be an advantage.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)
What you will do:
• Support the mainstreaming of gender and gender-transformative approaches into WFP operations and activities, including supporting implementation of robust gender analysis at all phases of the programme cycle.
• Support senior management in the Regional Bureau and the Country Offices to ensure strong institutional commitment and leadership (through active and visible champions) for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) programme and process objectives.
• Advise and support the Regional Bureau units and country offices on the implementation of the WFP Gender Policy to mainstream gender into WFP programmes and activities at the regional level and in Country Offices.
• Provide policy advice on specific gender issues that may impact on WFP operations.
• Develop and implement capacity-building and gender training activities in the country offices, to build a minimum level of shared expertise – including but not limited to gender, gender analysis, transformative approaches, gender-based violence, sexual exploitation and abuse and other related subjects.
• Coordinate a baseline assessment of GEWE in the region and in WFP operations to inform the above;
• Lead work and support staff to effectively apply the Gender and Age Marker to WFP activities.
• Support the Gender Results Network coordinators of each country office in the region, animate and re-establish the regional Gender Results Network.
• Strengthen strategic partnerships on gender, engage in technical fora and support the mobilization of resources required to implement the WFP gender policy and gender regional strategy effectively.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
   Type of Contract: Regional Gender Advisor SC10 (Equivalent to NOC)
   Duty Station: Nairobi Regional Bureau, Kenya, with travel within the region
   Contract Duration:  6 Months- with possibility of extension.
