The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of one year. There are good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Nairobi, Kenya.

As Country Director, you will develop and manage the impact oriented Welthungerhilfe (WHH) country program. In doing so you take into consideration the overall WHH strategy and care for the adherence to WHH quality standards. You are responsible for a sound financial management of the allocated WHH funds as well as for the acquisition of additional funding and ensure the safety and security of your employees and projects.

Your responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for the development and implementation of the country programme and annual planning (in line with WHH and regional strategy)
  • Identification of co-financing opportunities and ensuring the timely development of successful project proposals in line with the relevant donor regulations and strategies
  • Establishing good working relationships with donors and other stakeholders in-country/regional for emergency, rehabilitation and development programmes
  • Reporting to the Regional Directorate and Director of Programmes on the progress of the country programme and all risks associated with the project work
  • Elaboration of a preparedness plans for disasters and potential crises on the basis of country specific situations
  • Monitoring, analysis and reporting on relevant trends in the programme country and the neighbouring areas
  • Managing staff in country according to WHH leadership principles, staff policies and WHH strategy
  • Ensuring adherence to WHH global compliance and accountability systems
  • Responsibility for the establishment and adherence to the country wide security management system (establishment of functioning security plans etc.) in accordance to the global security policy/guidelines of Welthungerhilfe
  • Representation of WHH in-country vis-à-vis all relevant national and international stakeholders and partners and expanding the WHH network

Your profile

  • A university or polytechnic degree in a relevant field, like International Development Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid, Management, Geography or Agricultural Sciences
  • At least 10 years of management experience and relevant leadership experience in international humanitarian aid and development co-operation, preferably in the region
  • Sound experience in security/crisis management
  • Experience working with partner organizations
  • Coordination and organisational skills – even under a high workload
  • Excellent HR Management skills
  • Ability to work in an intercultural environment
  • A very good command of spoken and written English, proficiency in German would be an asset
