About GCP Human Resources Team 

Within the context of WCS’s Human Resources Framework, the Global Conservation Program (GCP) Human Resources team (GCP HR) partners with GCP to build a global, diverse, and engaged workforce by attracting, developing and retaining talent to deliver on GCP’s strategy and mission. GCP HR collaborates with leadership, managers, and employees to develop talent solutions and engage on performance, employee relations, and policy application while partnering on a wide range of activities with HR Centers of Excellence (CoEs) – Learning and Talent Management, Total Rewards, Recruitment, and HR Operations and Systems. The GCP HR team ensures that GCP has the diverse, equitable, inclusive, and high-impact global teams necessary to drive an ambitious global agenda. 

About HR Director – Americas 

The HR Director – Americas leads WCS’s human resources activities across the Americas. As an advisor to GCP Americas leadership, the HR Director is responsible for leading HR initiatives in the six Americas regions across 15 countries. The HR Director will act as a strategic partner that supports the Americas programs and works directly with regional and country program leadership within these programs. The focus of the role is to provide hands-on operational HR support to programs while helping to build their HR capacity going forward. The HR Director will work with the regional and country teams to execute on global and regional HR strategies and initiatives. They will participate in the development of global HR tools, policies and procedures and facilitate the implementation at the country and regional levels. 

WCS seeks an individual who builds effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders across boundaries, is collaborative, models inclusive leadership, and has a solutions-oriented approach. The role also requires someone with HR leadership experience across the Americas and who is bilingual in Spanish and English. Competency in Portuguese is a plus. 

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Provide hands-on technical HR support to regions and country programs and serve as a strategic partner providing advice and counsel to the senior team at the country and regional level. As needed, serve as primary point of contact for all HR matters. Coordinate, as required, with colleagues from HR Centers of Excellence (CoEs) as well as GCP Operations, Finance and Administration, Office of the General Counsel, and IT. 
  • Co-develop regional HR strategies with regional directors to support organizational strategy and regional/country program goals and objectives. 
  • Lead organizational HR initiatives for the regional/country programs such as workforce planning, HR capacity building and evaluation, HR resource accessibility, learning and development, performance management, recruitment support, etc. to ensure programs have the right talent in the right places at the right time. 
  • Identify and facilitate development and implementation of standard operating procedures, tools, resources, and HR metrics.   
  • Oversee compliance with local labor laws within the region, including in Civil Law and Common Law countries. Work with offices and staff in region on employee relations issues. 
  • Ensure local compensation and benefit practices are in alignment with organizational rewards strategies and local law. 
  • Ensure that HR issues are given full consideration in all decision making and are in compliance with the spirit and intent of local labor laws as well as donor requirements where applicable.  Solicit feedback and recommend improvements where appropriate. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned and contribute to the development of the global HR function for WCS. 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree a plus. 
  • Minimum 10+ years of progressive HR professional experience with a minimum of 5 years as a regional HR manager or director or equivalent education and experience 
  • Demonstrated success as an HR generalist supporting employee groups in multiple jurisdictions within a regional or global environment. 
  • Demonstrated success in supporting and building relationships with key senior management. 
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate agreement amidst diverse points of view.  
  • Broad knowledge and experience in recruitment, compensation and benefits, labor law in both Civil Law and Common Law countries, organization development, employee relations, and training and development. 
  • Experience in managing international hired employees including relocation, benefits, and other critical employee relations issues. 
  • Strong collaborator with effective interpersonal and analytical skills who is able to work seamlessly across countries, cultures, and organizational units. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work, manage, and meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced, high volume environment; aptitude for problem solving and decision making needed. 
  • Must have work experience in South or Central America as well as North America, including familiarity with common labor laws. 
  • Fluency in Spanish and English required. Competency in Portuguese a plus.  
  • Ability to spend 30-40% traveling within the Americas once Covid-related travel restrictions are lifted. 
  • SPHR, GPHR, CIPD or other HR professional certification preferred
