UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.
Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.
And we never give up.
For every child, a fair chanceRates of wasting across the WCA Region have remained persistently high over the last decade. One of the largest contributing factors is that existing practice takes a treatment heavy approach to wasting. Wasting is heavily associated with humanitarian intervention, despite most wasted children living outside of emergency contexts, and therefore wasting is approached from a life-saving perspective rather than a long-term child development issue. In recognizing this trend, in 2019 UNICEF WCARO, with partners, embarked on a revision of the sector’s approach to management of wasting, resulting in a strategic vision to scale-up “integrated approaches for the prevention and treatment of wasting”.

UNICEF WCARO has been at the forefront of adapting treatment interventions due to contextual challenges and has been the main contributing voice globally to advocate for reform to the treatment of wasting through evidence and knowledge. UNICEF WCARO intends to continue driving programmatic change through consolidating the various findings, collaborating closely with partners and UN agencies, and advocating with our country offices to national ministries.
Given this gap in evidence and knowledge on wasting prevention, it is essential for UNICEF to expand knowledge in this area as a pathway for impact. Without this knowledge, we will not be able to implement impactful interventions to prevent child wasting. UNICEF, as the world leader on child nutrition, has a responsibility to anticipate the information needs of national governments and implementing partners, and bring responses to the questions the sector is facing. As a regional office, we have invested in a significant partnership worth USD 3 million on evidence generation for wasting with IFPRI to ensure our effective leadership in this domain. The effective management of this 2-year partnership will be essential to ensure success and keep UNICEF in the lead.
A major component of this TA will therefore be the management of this large partnership with IFPRI. This partnership will be crucial in creating the shift towards truly integrated services. It is not simply the results of this partnership, but the process and the learnings resulting from the process, which will be a catalyst for change. As such, it is crucial that this partnership is managed in a collaborative and engaging way to ensure that we can effectively influence partners to join us on this journey. The role will be crucial in providing technical support to IFPRI and Country Offices, with their implementing partners, on the nutritional interventions which will be measured. This role will also help to support the coordination of an essential Technical Advisory Group of nutrition researchers to ensure the quality and integrity of the interventions and their associated study design.
Furthermore, this role will support in the coordination of evidence generation, in collaboration with key implementing partners, on modifications to treatment including notably the simplified approaches research portfolio. UNICEF WCARO has driven the agenda for reform and change of the treatment of wasting services through enhanced coordination and partnerships. This role will continue to support the systematic and predictable technical support, dissemination of information and coordination of this important workstream. In addition, this role will support country offices to advocate for policy and protocol changes at the national level with government counterparts to accelerate evidence to action.
