Sudan, surrounded by the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Libya and South Sudan, positioned next to East, West, South and North Africa, is surrounded by complex conflicts in an unpredictable, volatile and rapidly evolving region. Sudan is by size the third biggest country in Africa, with a diverse population of around 42 million people. Sudan’s children make up half of the total population, and the past two decades have seen their lives significantly improve: fewer girls and boys are dying before their fifth birthday, primary school attendance is increasing, immunization coverage is high and the country remains polio free. Still, millions of children continue to suffer from protracted conflict in Darfur, the Kordofans, and Blue Nile, from seasonal natural disasters, malnutrition and disease outbreaks, and from under-investment in basic social services. More than three million of Sudan’s school aged children are not in the classroom. UNICEF has been in Sudan since 1952 and continues with a presence in 12 of Sudan’s 18 states.
How can you make a difference?
Basic objectives of consultancy
Establish UNICEF as a credible source of information through different media outlets
Advocate for major campaigns using key messages – to influence target audiences to act in the best interest of children
Increase children and adolescent engagement through arts activities to advocate for Child Right Convention (CRC)
Key Activities/Tasks
1. Establish UNICEF as a credible source of information
Collate facts, figures, statistics, studies and information for SUN initiative, ODF Campaign, Children on the move and End Violence in Schools into public advocacy materials
Develop innovative approaches to produce advocacy materials
Media Relations
2. Support the Cause Framework-advocacy, public advocacy initiatives
Assist in the development of advocacy briefs for programme
Assist in the development of content and advocacy strategy for programme campaigns such as SUN initiative, ODF Campaign, Children on the Move and End Violence in Schools
Training field offices on communication and advocacy tools
 3.  Support child participation and child rights through art- Sudan’s adolescents
Develop innovative approaches through which adolescents and children can produce their own materials and share with UNICEF pages/platforms through art, film, poetry, short stories.
Work directly with Filmmaking for Children Initiative
Outputs/Deliverables
Establish UNICEF as a credible source of information
Establish fact sheets Human Interest Stories, Press releases, media advisories infographics, graphic novels, short social media videos
Establish media relations with journalists, radio and television both nationally and internationally to share key messages and advocacy content and provide them with training by informing them about the CRC related to the above-mentioned campaigns and gender equities.
Support the Cause Framework-advocacy, public advocacy initiatives
Briefing notes, images, video. Web pages, key messages, success stories etc. that meet the country and global standards as set out in the Communication Toolkit.
Establish communication platform to share human interest stories, photos from the field. Train field officers in basic in photo ethics, photo-taking skills and anatomy of human interest stories
Support child participation and child rights through art- Sudan’s adolescents
Media engagement and creative content – film festivals, workshops
Create a fictional character that will represent and advocate for the CRC. Which will then be created into different media platform such as an animation, graphic novel or a children’s story.
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
Education: University degree, ideally in the field of communications / public relations / journalism
Work experience: Minimum of 1-year relevant work experience [communication/ development / journalism / film].  Arabic and English writing skills.
Dynamic communicator with strong presentation skills, good interpersonal skills, a team player with the ability to work cross-sections to achieve results.
Languages: Arabic / English
Computer skills; Word / excel / PowerPoint / knowledge in graphic design, web design an asset.
