Sudan, surrounded by the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Libya and South Sudan, positioned next to East, West, South and North Africa, is surrounded by complex conflicts in an unpredictable, volatile and rapidly evolving region. Sudan is by size the third biggest country in Africa, with a diverse population of around 42 million people. Sudan’s children make up half of the total population, and the past two decades have seen their lives significantly improve: fewer girls and boys are dying before their fifth birthday, primary school attendance is increasing, immunization coverage is high and the country remains polio free. Still, millions of children continue to suffer from protracted conflict in Darfur, the Kordofan’s, and Blue Nile, from seasonal natural disasters, malnutrition and disease outbreaks, and from under-investment in basic social services. More than three million of Sudan’s school aged children are not in the classroom. UNICEF has been in Sudan since 1952 and continues with a presence in 12 of Sudan’s 18 states.
How can you make a difference?
Working closely with UNICEFs overall PBF Coordinator, the Peacebuilding Consultant will:
Lead in the coordination of the PBF project across the State (CD/WD) 30% of time.
Provide technical peacebuilding support to UNICEF and its partners across the State (CD/WD) 30% of time.Provide technical peacebuilding support to UNICEF teams across Darfur and the wider UNICEF Sudan Office as required – 40% of time.
Basic objectives of consultancy
Objective 1: Provide support to the effective planning, monitoring, reporting and evaluation of the Peacebuilding Project.

Key Activities/TasksLead the development/analyzing of the PBF baseline survey in coordination with other agencies and partners (including field trips)
Coordinate the development/finalization of an interagency M&E FrameworkLead the development of a quarterly monitoring plan for UNICEFLead the development/revision of indicators for monitoring peacebuilding/conflict sensitivity approaches and outputs/outcomesConduct joint and or independent monitoring of UNICEF-supported activitiesCoordinate and finalize monitoring and progress reports on regular basisLead the drafting of briefings, workshop reports and of regular donor reports
Evaluation Criteria: Availability of quality deliverables in a timely manner
Objective 2: Lead the coordination of the PBF with all relevant stakeholders at Locality and State level as well as with Peacebuilding Secretariat and internally with UNICEF management and all Darfur Field Offices

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
Qualification or specialized knowledge/experience/expertise required for the assignment:An advanced University degree in one of the following fields: social sciences, peacebuilding, public administration, law, public health, nutrition, international relations, business administration or other related disciplines. Advanced degree in one of the mentioned disciplines is an asset.
Minimum 7 years professional experience in peacebuilding, humanitarian and development programming and implementation at the field levelPrevious experience in peacebuilding, mainstreaming conflict sensitivity and emergency preparedness and response. Experience in Darfur will be an added advantageSolid knowledge of peacebuilding theory and practice; and of the latest developments and principles of humanitarian action and international humanitarian lawFluency in writing, reading and speaking English and ArabicStrong negotiating, communication and advocacy skillsComputer skills, including various office applicationsAbility to work and live in difficult environment
