Objectives, Purpose & Expected results
A consultant is sought to write 20 human stories and accompanying photographs (6 for each story) focusing on individual beneficiaries of UNICEF supported programmes. These communication materials will be used to support donor reports as well as to share on the UNICEF website. The objectives of the Human Interest Stories and photographs is to give a human face to donor proposals and reports.
Specific Objectives are;
Produce at least 20 narrative human interest stories and accompanying photos (6 for each story) which highlight;
The issues affecting children in the areas of Child Survival and Development, WASH, Child Protection and Education
The actions taken by UNICEF and Partners in these programme focus areas
The impact of this support and the challenges that remain
Description of the assignment
 Major Tasks to be undertaken:
Review the Country Programme Document, Situation Analysis Report, UNICEF regional and Global Communication Strategy and available project proposals and reports
Liaise with Programme staff to identify relevant programme areas and counterparts to engage in the development of the Human Interest stories and photographs.
Collect the material for, write and edit at least 20 Human Interest Stories
Capture appropriate high resolution photographs (300DPI) that will accompany the Human Interest Stories in donor reports, proposals, programme documents, social media, UNICEF Websites, power point presentation, social media packages and the exhibition kits
Produce a detailed structural proposed plan of approach and timeline for the consultancy.
Deliverables
Based on the background information and technical input from the Communication Specialist and the programmes focal people, the consultant is required to:
Produce high-quality Human Interest Stories of the experiences of beneficiaries of UNICEF supported programmes
All the stories will be accompanied by at least 6 hi resolution photographs (300DPI)
Teachers and parents may be interviewed to provide perspective, background or complimentary information, however the story should as far as possible be told from each child’s perspective.
Location and Duration
The consultant is expected to start on 1 June 2019 and will visit different programme sites which are in the districts of Sierra Leone to collect the stories and photographs. The duration of the consultancy is 42 working days within a period of 3 months.
Call for proposals
Interested persons should submit technical and financial proposals detailing proposed methodology, workplan, timeline, methodology and samples of similar work.
The proposed budget with a detailed breakdown including estimated direct costs regarding consultancy fee, living expenses and travel both into and within Sierra Leone should be submitted separately.
Value Added Tax (VAT) must be shown as a separate line item in the financial quotation where appropriate.
Payment of services will be based on the above payment schedule
Evaluation weighting
             70% technical
            30% financial
            100% total
Administrative issues
The consultant will work on his/her own computer(s) and use his/her own office resources and materials in the execution of this assignment.
The consultant can outsource the services of an additional professional to support the assignment and will meet the cost for this additional professional
The consultant’s fee shall be inclusive of all office administrative costs including professional fees, living expenses and travel into and within Sierra Leone.
All the stories and photographs will remain the property of UNICEF for unlimited use (website, publications, newspaper articles, etc.)
The consultant will be responsible for having the parent or guardian of each girl sign a waiver (to be provided) giving permission for the collection of information and taking of photographs
The consultant will strictly adhere to UNICEF’s policies and guidelines around photographing of children in vulnerable situations
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
Master’s Degree in journalism or any relevant academic qualifications
Professional qualifications in Media/Communication/photography.
At least 8 years’ experience working writing and photography –  example of similar photographs and narrative documenting work and journalistic writing will be required.
Ability to effectively grasp and incorporate inputs/feedback from multiple contributors
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of international development, including child rights
Previous working experience with UNICEF and/or another international development organization is desirable.
