UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.
Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.
And we never give up.
For every child, Equity
The overall UNICEF Rwanda country programme (2018-2023) goal is to progressively support the realization of the rights of every child, especially the most disadvantaged.
The child protection section in Rwanda prioritizes the strengthening of the child protection system to ensure that all children can be protected from violence, exploitation, neglect and abuse, this approach ensures that components of the child protection system, such as the social workforce in Rwanda is appropriately strengthened to support the prevention and response to all child protection issues.
In August of 2018, an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak was declared in Nord Kivu province, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), caused by the Ebola Zaire species. The geography of the outbreak poses a risk of the virus being introduced into neighbouring countries including Rwanda.
A cumulative total of 1264 confirmed and probable EVD cases, including 814 deaths (748 confirmed and 66 probable) has been reported as of 14th April 2019. 374 people have recovered from the disease. Case fatality rate as of 14th April 2019 is 64%.
A regional EVD risk assessment conducted by WHO in response to the Equateur outbreak in May 2018 rated Rwanda as a priority 2 country for preparedness, with a limited likelihood of spread of Ebola virus and the possible impact of such an event ranging from significant to severe. From 22-27 May 2018, WHO conducted an in-country assessment of EVD preparedness in Rwanda; the country was rated 62% overall, with variations across thematic areas.
