OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
Since 2018, UNESCO has been implementing in eight (08) countries from West and Central Africa (Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea-Conakry, Niger, Nigeria, Mali and Senegal), and also in Europe (Italy), the project « Empowering young people in Africa through Media and Communication », with the support Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), through the “Fondo Africa” of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI). The project aims, among others, to build media capacity to empower young people in West and Central Africa to make informed decisions on migration issues through better access to quality information.
Within this project, UNESCO will organize a series of conferences on information and migration in West and Central Africa – 08 at national level (in the targeted countries of the project) and 01 at regional level -, that will gather national and local authorities, UN agencies, international organizations, media professionals, media associations, autoregulatory bodies, experts, academics, CSOs and NGOs (including youth associations). A scientific committee will be set up to facilitate the exchange of views on the progress and challenges of media coverage of migration in West and Central Africa, and to collect recommendations to be discussed and adopted at the national and regional conferences.
In furtherance of the above, the UNESCO Regional Office for West Africa (Sahel) is seeking to hire an International Consultant to support the Communication and Information in the implementation of national and regional conferences.

Long Description
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Support the Scientific Committee to identify key stakeholders for national (Senegal and Niger), and regional conferences;
• Set-up and implement contact lists, and ensure the planning activities;
• Elaborate strategic documents related to the conferences;
• Prepare and organize internal meetings with team members, as well as external meetings with stakeholders;
• Ensure the preparation and the follow-up of the recruitment of an agency specialized in the organization of global conferences in Africa (including terms of reference, selection process);
• Ensure the preparation and the follow-up of the recruitment of an agency or organization specialized in the organization of conferences (or similar events) in Niger and Senegal (including terms of reference, selection process);
• Draft invitation letters (in French and English), the agendas and other communication material on the conferences;
• Provide the project coordinator with regular updates on registrations and registration lists of national and regional conferences;
• Support UNESCO to select the organization or institution in charge to set-up the Scientific Committee, as well as the agency in charge to organize the regional conference and all the stakeholders;
• Engage as a focal point for team members, the organization or institution selected to set-up the Scientific Committee, as well as the agency in charge to organize the regional conference and all the stakeholders, collating feedbacks and suggestions, as necessary to ensure the organization of the conferences;
• Support the administrative assistant in all contractual and financial matters regarding the conferences.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
• Master degree in event management, communication, journalism, or any relevant ?eld.

Work Experience
• At least 5 years of experience organizing conferences or events (or similar activities) in the field of development cooperation;
• A demonstrable ability to produce clear and concise documents, structured logically and comprehensively;
• A demonstrable experience to organize conferences (or similar activities) in the development sector in Africa;
• Fluency in professional French and English is required;
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to write clearly, concisely and with strong verbal communication skills;
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to plan and meet deadlines through and with teams of people and individuals from diverse, cross-cultural backgrounds;
• financial/budget reporting;
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines and on multiple projects simultaneously.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience organizing high level and international event, including, summit, conference or forum (or related activities) in West Africa;
• Experience in event or conference management for UN Organization.
