Reuters is looking for an energetic reporter to be our correspondent in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The successful candidate for this contractor position will be just as comfortable covering a street protest in the capital Kinshasa as a press conference with the central bank governor, and equally keen to jump on United Nations plane to cover the latest rebellion in lawless eastern Congo as heading to remote mine to report on child miners digging up cobalt for electric batteries.

A source of endless fascination to the world’s powers for more than two centuries, Congo has so many quirky, unbelievable stories that the reporter’s biggest problem will being trying to choose between them. This year promises to be full of drama and tension as President Joseph Kabila seems determined to cling to power despite his mandate running out at the end of 2016, triggering angry protests and at the hands of dozens of militia and rebel groups.

Elections have been delayed so often that few Congolese even believe they will happen, but if they do go ahead as scheduled this year, almost everything about them will be contested – including Kabila’s right to run again. Congo’s huge strategic importance to Africa, to the West, and to the mining companies seeking practically every element on the periodic table in its vast territory means it rarely stays out of the news for long.

The ideal candidate will at least one or two years journalistic experience, fluent or good working French, a clear, lively writing style and a strong record of breaking news and in-depth investigations. She/He will be able to work closely with TV, pictures and graphics teams to produce strong multimedia content.
