The U.S. Embassy Tokyo’s Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Department of State announces an open competition for entities to submit applications to create a sustainable academic, business, and/or people-to-people exchanges between the U.S. and Japanese cities currently serving as U.S. Host Towns.

Early Grant Information for NGOs

Program Objectives

In advance of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Japanese Cabinet Secretariat’s Office launched the Host Town Initiative. This initiative connects local Japanese towns with foreign athletes, who will compete in the Games and engage locally through various exchanges and programs. As a result, there are 18 cities in Japan currently registered as Host Towns to “host” Team USA athletes, earning them the designation of U.S. Host Town. While this initiative sparks bilateral exchange, it is limited to the Games. The purpose of this grant is to support the creation of lasting, sustainable academic, business, and/or people-to-people exchanges between the U.S. and these Japanese cities.
Priority Areas

The Embassy welcomes proposals that address these complex social issues, and is particularly interested in supporting the following priority areas: the creation of sister city relationships, academic exchanges that promote study in the U.S., inclusive education and employment, women’s economic empowerment, youth leadership, and community building. All proposals must include a linkage to or partnership with an American city, organization(s), or institution(s) that will deepen bilateral cooperation.

Funding provided through capital support for community development projects

Length of performance period: Up to 24 months
Number of awards anticipated: 1-3 awards (dependent on amounts)
Award amounts: awards may range from a minimum of $5,000 to a maximum of $50,000
Total available funding: $50,000
Program Performance Period: Proposed programs should be completed in 2 years or less.
Priority Region: United States and Japan

Participants and Audiences: The Embassy will only consider proposals that are submitted by or in partnership with officially designated U.S. Host Towns. Potential participants could include: government representatives; academic institutions and staff; business leaders and entrepreneurs; start-ups; community leaders; cultural institutions; journalists and media organizations; and women and youth.
