The PEPFAR Small Grants Program is funded through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR). The PEPFAR goal in Mozambique is to support country efforts to achieve epidemic control through evidence-based policies and interventions to drive progress and save lives.

As part of the PEPFAR, the U.S. Embassy in Maputo administers the Small Grants Program, which supports small, grassroots, community-run projects throughout Mozambique. The U.S. Embassy is currently soliciting innovative and cost-effective projects/activities focused on the following areas from local, legally registered, community-based, non-governmental organizations.

  • Supporting services for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) and their households;
  • HIV Prevention for Priority Populations (especially Adolescent Girls and Young Women and Young Men).

Funding is expected to be allocated as follows:

  • Orphans and Vulnerable Children: $38,000.00 for each project.
  • Prevention for Priority Populations: $38,000.00 for each project.

The PEPFAR Small Grants Office welcomes applications from registered non-profit Mozambican organizations such as Community Based Organizations (CBO), FaithBased Organizations (FBO), and other Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO).

  • For-profit or commercial entities are not eligible to apply.
  • Current Recipients of PEPFAR funding are not eligible.
  • Organizations already receiving funding or substantial support from the U.S. Government are not eligible to apply.
  • All applicants must be registered Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) and have been in operation for at least one year to be eligible for funding.
  • Organizations must be able to demonstrate that they have adequate internal controls and financial monitoring procedures in place.
  • Successful applications should demonstrate strong ties and support in the local community and with local governmental authorities.

Each project accepted for funding must report results four times per year. Grant recipients must be able to quantify and describe in detail the services delivered with the provided funding, broken down by age and gender. For example:

  • Number of orphans and vulnerable children who received support, including details on the support provided;
  • Number of people reached with preventive interventions and detailed description of interventions;
  • Number of active beneficiaries served by PEPFAR programs for children and families affected by HIV/AIDS and detailed description of support provided.
