U.S. Department of Justice seeking Applications for “Enhancing Juvenile Indigent Defense” Program

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) is seeking applications for funding under the fiscal year (FY) 2020 Enhancing Juvenile Indigent Defense program.

The program will provide funding to states and localities to enhance juvenile defense delivery systems. This program furthers the Department’s mission to reduce violent crime by supporting states and localities in their efforts to address barriers and gaps within their juvenile justice systems for indigent youth in order to reduce reoffending and decrease recidivism.

The goal of this program is to implement enhancements that improve juvenile indigent defense.
Program objectives are to ensure that youth involved with the juvenile justice system have access to legal representation and access to resources that address the collateral consequences of justice system involvement.

OJP Priority Areas

In FY 2020, and in addition to executing any statutory prioritization that may be applicable, OJP will give priority consideration to applications as follows:

states and territories, and
units of local government.
Eligible applicants that propose to provide direct services to juveniles must adhere to the applicable state law that defines the term “juvenile.”
