About the role.

 The Communication officer will work with the SNV/CRAFT Project’s Regional Project Manager in planning, designing, implementing, and carrying out the project’s communication activities. S/he will draft information, content and/or products for public access, create and maintain the SNV/CRAFT internal and public communication information strategies and, act as a writer/editor for the project as needed, and fulfil requests for information from the media and public.

The officer will work closely with the HQ based Climate Change Advocacy and Communications advisor on the formulation and implementation of communication and advocacy strategies. At Project Management Unit, he/she will drive and lead the overall brand led communications strategy for the project, nationally and internationally. The officer will guide and support the CRAFT country teams on the national communication efforts.

At country level, the Communications Officer will coordinate and support the country Project Managers in the generation of content and identification of the countries’ specific communication needs, additionally, the necessary evidence and implementation of advocacy campaigns related to climate change and climate adaptation.

The Communications Officer will work with CRAFT Consortium partners to advance the project’s communication’s strategy and implementation plan, emphasising CRAFT through their own communication channels.

Job Description

Content development

She/he leads gathering and developing engaging visual and written material, effectively explaining CRAFT’s work and engages a wide range of external audiences in our work.

Production of regular news items, relevant publications, and attractive stories about CRAFT work.

Develop content (stories!) to project and corporate publications such as the annual report, magazines, brochures, leaflets, and videos.

Manage production of professional level publications and key communications materials. Where appropriate use professional writers.

Ensure sufficient and adequate visual material is generated linked with the project and adequately stored (photo and videos)

Coordinate with PMU and country project teams on the use of consultants, lead the development and implementation of such assignments related to communication and visibility

Draft speeches for senior management team and prepare effective public presentations

Visibility and profiling

Developing social media plan and monitoring its implementation, and updating the CRAFT social media platforms with timely content

Manage the CRAFT website and ensure it is up to date with regular news items, relevant publications, and attractive stories about CRAFT work.

Leverage on conferences, workshops, and events to profile CRAFT.

Take the lead in the planning and implementing of learning and high-profile events for the project.

Based on CRAFT project priorities, he/she identifies key issues for communication, preparing and implementing strategies and messages

Networking and outreach

Oversees traditional media and related external communications activities and leads in developing effective online social media strategies to engage the wider public.

Foster good working relationships with media agencies, relevant correspondents, and journalists.

Identify relevant networks to link communication efforts with

Knowledge management

Support knowledge development, content development based on the project knowledge agenda.

Support advocacy initiatives by coordinating appropriate audience research, compiling and analyzing relevant data, preparing materials (e.g. films, videos);

Support internal knowledge sharing and profiling of CRAFTS’s work in Agriculture and Climate Change adaptation through the internet.

Communication database

Identify potential visuals and documents for usage in internal and/or external communication, advise country team on development of these visuals and documents and coordinate collection and archive.

Storage of data: Ensure adequate storage (easily accessible) of all communication material, including adherence to GDRP guideline.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in communication, media, information, or relevant related fields.

At least 5 years of relevant work experience in communications on climate change and sustainable development issues

Strong oral and excellent written professional communication skills, proficient editor 

Networking skills, ability to build or expand networks with relevant people and organisations 

Innovative and creative with an eye for design, art, and style 

Advanced skills in different computer design, software, photography, and video

Project management skills, including organisation of events and experience working with external service delivery agencies

Up to date with digital/online communication technologies and platforms

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Fluency in English (working language)

High level of integrity and accountability

Willingness to travel to all project locations, including Kenya and Tanzania for CRAFT.

Additional Information

Terms of Appointment; This is a full-time position with the successful candidate contracted on a 1-year period with possible extension.
