HEAD OF LEGAL

SHELTER-AFRIQUE is a leading pan – African Development Finance Institution that is dedicated to investment in housing and urban development in Africa. The company provides advisory services and project management services for delivery of large-scale affordable housing projects, as well as lines of credit to          financial institution to finance access to affordable housing in 44 African countries. The Company invites applications from suitably qualified nationals of its member countries to fill the position of Head of Legal available at its Regional office in Nairobi, Kenya.

Main role and responsibilities

Provide administrative and professional leadership to the Company’s legal function

• Ensures that Company’s operations are conducted in compliance with its Statutes and constitutive documents, regulations, policies and other legal requirements.

• Provides technical and team leadership in the Legal Department towards the provision of quality legal services to the Company by providing internal legal

advice on matters affecting the Company or its employees.

• Ensures that loan agreements, security documents, and other agreements to which Company is a party are properly negotiated, documented, perfected

and, where applicable duly registered.

• Ensures Company adequate representation by external legal counsel and otherwise in legal proceedings and dispute resolution processes.

• Manages the work of direct reports by assisting in setting work programs and providing guidance and supervision for the purpose of efficiently and effectively managing and mitigating Company’s legal risk.

• Responsibility for the general administrative and operational processes of the Legal Department and is expected to mentor more junior lawyers in the team.

Minimum Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

• Master’s degree in Law, Business, Finance, Economics or other relevant field and a Bachelor’s Degree in Law (i.e. LLB or equivalent) from a recognized

institution.

• Admission to the bar (as an attorney, advocate, barrister or equivalent) in the jurisdiction of qualification.

• Qualification to practice English Law will be an added advantage.

• Experience in international financing in Africa will be an added advantage.

• Minimum of 8 to 10 years of combined relevant experience, including international work experience in a commercial, financial or legal advisory

institution and/or public sector financial body (e.g. law firm, multi-national corporate, bank, insurance company, investment advisory firm, DFI, Ministry of Finance, National Treasury, Sovereign Wealth Fund).

• Knowledge of French is an added advantage.

• Robust background as a banking or finance lawyer.

• Proven track record leading teams to achieve results.
