Request for Proposals: Making the Connection between Child Marriage and SGBV, HIV/AIDS and Education

Hivos Southern Africa is seeking proposals for its “Making the Connection between Child Marriage and SGBV, HIV/AIDS and Education”.

Grants will be provided to organisations proposing innovative ways to address the inter-sectionality between child marriage and one or more of the following three topics:  Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, HIV/AIDS and education at the national level that have the potential for scale up to the regional level.

Funding Categories

The following funding categories are open:

  • Category A grants: This category seeds and supports activities at a national level to a maximum of US$14,000. Category A grants intend to increase understanding of the specific SRHR needs of children in marriage the scope of, and responses to child marriage in the region.
  • Category B grants: This category supports activities at a regional level (multi-country and/or collaborative) to a maximum of US$20,000. Category B grants aim to improve coordination of activities to prevent and respond to child marriage in the region, and to expand the network of CSOs working collectively on child marriage in the region.

Geographic Focus

Southern Africa including: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, eSwatini, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Activities

  • research to gather, document and share evidence (including prevalence data of child marriage at country level);
  • pilot testing programs that seek to strengthen intersectional programming with one or more of the three topics
  • developing and implementing initiatives to improve the situation of children in marriage and adolescent girls vulnerable to marriage connected to one or more of the three topics; and
  • advocacy efforts that seek to change/implement policies or programs at the national level related to one or more of the three topics that will have an impact on child marriage.

Preference

Funding is limited. Preference will therefore be given to:

  • Proposals that are well thought out and demonstrate a clear connection to the objectives of the Regional SRHR Fund and the proposal call.
  • Proposals that articulate a strategic and innovative approach to addressing one or more of the three issues by making a direct connection to the reality of child marriage and child brides.
  • Proposals that have the potential to have the greatest impact in moving the child marriage agenda forward in Southern Africa.
  • Proposals that include elements of sustainability.
