Duties and ResponsibilitiesAbout UN-HabitatUN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable and resilient towns and cities. It is the focal point agency for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat envisions well-planned, well-governed and efficient cities and towns, with adequate housing, infrastructure and universal access to employment and basic services such as water, energy, and sanitation.
UN-Habitat Urban Planning LabThe Urban Planning and Design Lab (Urban Lab) is an initiative from UN-Habitat to promptly respond to the requests of national and local governments to support sustainable urban development. The Urban Lab is the integrative facility of the Agency where innovative processes and partnerships are translated into tangible and transformative solutions to complex urban challenges. Throughout, the Urban Lab acts as a neutral broker, managing knowledge in complex stakeholder settings to resolve multi-sectoral, multi-scalar and multi-stakeholder challenges.The Lab brings together a multidisciplinary team of urban planners, environmental, data-science, mobility, legal and financial experts, providing a holistic and proactive approach to sustainable urbanization. Hence, the Lab captures the necessary thematic disciplines, experts, actors and stakeholders.In this context, the Urban Lab applies an integrated approach to systemic and strategic planning to deliver transformative change for sustainable urbanization and to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda.
The Urban Lab falls under the Planning, Finance and Economy Section, which is part of the Urban Practices Branch and Global Solutions Division.
The Urban Lab manage and develop a portfolio of Projects that are related to regional and territorial planning, urban planning and urban profiling, neighborhood and districts scale, supporting the UN-Habitat Country and Regional Offices. The Urban Lab is also involved in UN-Habitat global programmes (such as the Global Future Cities Programme) and it is also active in the production and realization of normative work.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesUnder the overall supervision of the Chief of the Planning, Finance and Economy Section, the Urban Lab manager, in coordination with the UN-Habitat Regional Offices and in close collaboration with UN-Habitat thematic Sections, the incumbent of the post will have to fulfill the following duties and responsibilities:
– Provide technical expertise in relation to Urban Lab projects;- Provide technical expertise in relation to the normative production and the technical support to UN-Habitat Regional Offices and Country Offices activities;- Advise and work with the Urban LAB team to analyze, collect, compile and interpret data to guide and inform the Projects and the Lab’s normative production;- Advise and work with the Urban LAB team on planning and designing effective, resilient, sustainable and fit-for-propose solutions;- Collaborate with UN-Habitat’s experts from thematic Sections involved in Urban Lab activities;- Attend and enhance capacity reinforcement trainings at national and local scales;- Provide technical inputs to the Project Managers in their management duties

Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

Considers all those to whom services are provided to be “clients ” and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view; Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect; Identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions; Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems; Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects; Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.
Planning and Organizing: Ability to prioritize activities and assignments and to easily switch between different projectsAcademic Qualifications: A minimum of advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Architecture, Urban Planning and Design, or related field that is relevant for sustainable urban development is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.Experience: A minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience in the field of urban development and planning,resilience, mobility, project finance, and/or data systems, GIS software use, data analysis , (and/or related fields) is required.
Work experience in developing countries and public sector is desirable.
Working knowledge and understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (and their monitoring/evaluation) and of the New Urban Agenda and working on social change projects is desirable;Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of other UN languages is an added advantage.
