MSF recrute 01 Nutrition Advisor (m/f/x) – MSF Belgium

Responding to nutritional needs requires transversal work, with an emphasis on integrated person-centered care as well as community engagement. It is a core activity for MSF. There is a strategic focus on malnourished children and adults, including pregnant and lactating women and those with chronic illnesses. In addition, MSF also provides nutritional support to those at risk of malnutrition, for example people with burns, those requiring intensive care or surgery. MSF continues to strive for new and innovative ways to reach populations in need and to adapt responses to be as efficacious as possible in complex contexts. In order to be timely, with the correct scale and approach MSF also needs monitor food and nutrition security, be poised to react and agile to change direction if required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

MAIN ACTIVITIES

  1.  Development and follow-up of nutritional strategy and activities in MSF supported programmes.

To ensure efficacy and quality of our nutritional interventions, the nutrition adviser:

  • Provides programmatic support and advice to teams in the countries where MSF works, the operations department and emergency pool (e-pool) for development of strategies, and planning of nutritional services;
  • In coordination with medical department colleagues (especially epidemiology team) supports the nutritional / food security evaluations or surveys;
  • Follows early warning systems such as Famine Early Warning Systems Network, Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, Food Security Nutrition Analysis Unit and supports projects to analyse the food security and nutrition trends in high-risk contexts;
  • Helps to estimate resources needed for nutrition preparedness and response;
  • Develops guidelines and standard operating procedures to set up activities and instils a culture of quality improvement;
  • Monitors projects: helps to collect and analyze nutritional data from the field with regular feedback
  • Critically reflects on documents / concept notes / monitoring-surveillance overviews developed by project teams.
  • Answers technical & programmatic questions specific to nutrition from medical and operational colleagues at headquarters and in the countries of operations.
  • Contributes to support for clinical case management, also through the MSF Telemedicine portal.
  • Provides hospital food service management advice based on protocols for both inhouse and outsource catering.

Conducts project visits to enable:

  • Direct evaluation of activities and needs (general organization, review of indicators, focus for quality improvement) with punctual reports, SMART recommendations and ongoing support to achieve them.
  • Technical support for implementation; including capacity building, training, coaching, bedside teaching utilizing (or adapting) protocols.
  1.  Technical Development

To disseminate and guide missions on our nutritional strategies and guidelines, the nutrition adviser:

  • Needs to keep up to date with relevant literature in the field of nutrition and participate in existing networks of nutritionists and specialists in food security.
  • Supports existing operational research and identifies new priorities for research or innovation in the field of nutrition
  • Develops and updates nutrition policies, protocols and tools in collaboration with medical, operational colleagues and the MSF Nutrition Working Group.
  • Contributes actively in internal MSF international working groups to support prioritization and normative work.
  • Contributes actively in internal thematic circles (working groups), medical meetings, Medical coordinator /Head of mission coordination week.
  1.  Support for human resources and staff development

To ensure selection and onboarding of staff and ensure staff get tools to set-up, support and monitor nutritional activities, the nutrition adviser:

  • Supports the development and implementation of training sessions for different staff profiles across diverse topics including: programmatic management, management of malnutrition, hospital based clinical nutrition, nutrition in emergencies.
  • Briefs (and debriefs) staff (medical & project coordinators, project medical referents as well as project level staff) in relation to programmes, focus for quality improvement and technical exchange.
  • Works with human resources (pool managers), to support the review of mobile staff with nutrition related work.
  1.  Communication and Advocacy

To support strategic and technically correct communication on nutritional issues, the nutrition adviser:

  • Supports the Communication Department in the development of communications concerning nutritional activities and programs.
  • Works with colleagues in the Analysis Department to develop relevant advocacy
  • Assists in the internal and external dissemination of MSF reports and findings in relation to nutrition supported by networking with key stakeholders.
  • Attends technical meetings and maintains regular contact with organizations concerned by nutrition and food security, including WHO, UNICEF, UNHCR, WFP, FAO.

Position within the organization:

  • Position is line-managed by the Medical Technical Manager of the Brussels Medical Department.
  • The position line-manages, coaches and supports Nutrition Mobile Implementing Officer.
  • Supports nutrition focal points in coordination with the project’s medical management
  • There is close collaboration with the: Medical Operations Manager and referents from the medical departments across OCB, including Paediatric, Vaccination, Health Promotion, Environmental Health, Mental Health, Sexual & Reproductive health, Surgical & Critical care, HIV/ TB, Pharmacy and the epidemiological team.
  • There will be collaboration with colleagues in the Operations, Analysis, Human Resources, Supply Departments and will be an integral colleague of the MSF Nutrition Working Group

Expériences / Formation

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and experiences

  • Bachelor’s in nutrition & dietetics / or an alternate (para)medical degree with further qualifications in nutrition
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Clinical and programmatic experience in dietetics/paediatrics/nursing/medicine in humanitarian contexts, with MSF or similar organization including 3 years minimum in managing nutritional emergencies (starting and/or running nutrition interventions)
  • Demonstrable skills in teaching, learning, mentoring and quality improvement
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and particularly Excel
  • Be familiar with Emergency Nutrition Assessment (ENA) Software and other data collection/statistical software.
  • Experience in clinical nutrition for patients in intensive care, surgery or with burns or advanced HIV, TB and familiarity with the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, Infant and Young Child Feeding and lactation management is an asset
  • Experience in hospital food service management, nutrition and food security analysis, conducting nutrition surveys, community health and outreach activities are assets

Other requirements

  • Willingness to travel overseas under difficult conditions in some insecure and remote locations
  • Languages: Proficient English C2 & Independent user French B2, other languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic) are an asset
  • Precise and clear writing skills
  • Ability and motivation to train, mentor and coach across abilities and cultures
  • Ability to carry out visits in all MSF-relevant contexts

Salaire

Conditions

  • Expected starting date: as soon as possible
  • Location (*): Brussels (Belgium) or any other MSF hub or Nairobi can be discussed
  • At least 30% of the time visiting countries of operations
  • Contract type: open-ended contract – Full time
  • If Brussels, Belgian contract; Salary according to MSF-OCB HQ grid. Meal Vouchers – Hospital Insurance (DKV) – Pension Plan – 100% reimbursement for public transportation costs – In-house canteen at fair prices. If other locations: The contractual conditions will be established based on the station, on administrative / legal constraints and in respect of MSF function grids and salary policies.
