Majalat Initiative launches Call for National Projects 2020

This call for proposals comes within the framework of the Majalat initiative funded by the European Union which aims at creating and promoting a space for encounter and constructive dialogue between South of the Mediterranean civil society (civil society organisations, trade unions, social movements, academic actors) and the European Union (EU).

The Arab word Majalat means ‘spaces, opportunities, and fields’. This initiative aims to create spaces for dialogue between Civil Society Organisations (CSO), unions, social movements and university students from both sides of Mediterranean region, and the European Union to influence views and regional policies.

The project specificity comes from its organisers who represent civil society network from both sides of the Mediterranean. The consortium is formed by the following partners: the Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND), the Arab Trade Union Confederation (ATUC), the EuroMed France Network, the EuroMed Rights Network, the Alternatives Forum Morocco (FMAS), and SOLIDAR.

The national projects will have to cover five key themes for the EU and Southern Neighbourhood countries’ relationship, namely governance and the rule of law, security and fighting against violence, migrations, economic and social dialogue, and social and climate justice. The countries concerned are Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Palestine, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia. Projects enhancing youth participation will be favoured, as well as projects implemented by Egyptian, Syrian or Libyan organisations (if necessary outside the country).

Aims

Within the scope of this structured dialogue, this call for proposals aims at:

Economic Development and Social dialogue
Clime and Social Justice
Sub themes:
Corruption / Shrinking space for civil society
Social protection and rights of migrants
From security to combating violence: a renewed, rights-based approach
The role of the private sector and investment and trade policies.
Social and climate justice, what approach
Enhancing in-country dialogue among different stakeholders.
This call for proposals will end up selecting five proposals (one for each theme). Actions will have to prepare a document/policy paper for the South Seminar which will take the 7t – 8th July 2020 in Beirut (TBC).

Five actions in total will be approved (one per theme). Each proposal will be funded for a maximum amount of 8,000 €.
The action will have to be implemented between 2nd May and 21st June 2020.

The following activities may be considered:

Support for CSO participation in local/national/regional policy dialogues;
Identification and dissemination coalition building and networking activities;
Dialogue building capacities;
Other actions directly related to the theme and dialogue oriented.
Eligibility Criteria

The applicant and the co-applicant must meet the following criteria:

(Ad) How to raise funds? Where can I find a list of donors for my area of work? How to write proposals? How can I submit a grant request to USAID, the European Commission or the Gates Foundation? Be recognised as a legal person (except for social movements).
Be non-profit organisation.
Subscribe to the values of Human Rights in its universality, indivisibility and interdependence.
Be part of the following categories: a civil society organisation, a labour organisation, a social movement (in this case, an organisation from Majalat consortium must act as guarantor by means of a letter of support) from the MENA region.
Prove the experience in one of the themes of the programme as well as a clear focus on dialogue based actions.
Have a democratic organisation structure independent from governments.
Be in charge of the management and preparation of the action together with the co-applicant(s), and not to act as intermediary.
Selection Criteria

Priority will be given to actions:

Involving bigger actions not funded by the EU resources providing co-financing. The action must be independently identified and justified.
Integrating young people, either by direct participation or by the thematic approach.
Be implemented by organizations from Egypt, Libya and Syria (if necessary outside the country).
Taking into consideration the specific needs in the countries of intervention.
Promoting dialogue or visibility actions having an impact at national level and providing policy recommendations and/or good practices.

The results will be published on the website on 13th April 2020.
